Thanks that did give me more options. Where and how would I put 1280X1024 into the mix?

Open the text editor and create a file, name it .xprofile (makes it a hidden file) and place in your home user's folder. In that file copy/paste this below, then reboot to your user. That was using my monitors and command cvt, so may not work for yours. If you need a higher resolution later, then just follow the example in the file.
xrandr --newmode "1280x720_60.00" 74.50 1280 1344 1472 1664 720 723 728 748 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA-1 1280x720_60.00
xrandr --addmode LVDS-1 1280x720_60.00
xrandr --newmode "1280x720_70.00" 88.25 1280 1352 1480 1680 720 723 728 752 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA-1 1280x720_70.00
xrandr --addmode LVDS-1 1280x720_70.00
xrandr --newmode "1600x900_60.00" 118.25 1600 1696 1856 2112 900 903 908 934 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA-1 1600x900_60.00
xrandr --addmode LVDS-1 1600x900_60.00
xrandr --newmode "1600x900_75.00" 151.25 1600 1704 1872 2144 900 903 908 942 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA-1 1600x900_75.00
xrandr --addmode LVDS-1 1600x900_75.00

then open Display in your OS and set it to one of those if you can.

You can find your own cvt settings for modeline by following example below.

Code: Select all

~ $ cvt 1600 900 60
# 1600x900 59.95 Hz (CVT 1.44M9) hsync: 55.99 kHz; pclk: 118.25 MHz
Modeline "1600x900_60.00" 118.25 1600 1696 1856 2112 900 903 908 934 -hsync +vsync

Code: Select all

cvt 1280 1024 60
cvt 1280 1024 70
cvt 1280 1024 75
post results and I will work it up for you. What is the highest refresh rate you can run on your monitor?
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

Thanks that did it. Now I have good resolution on the external monitor. I learned something today about adding that hidden file with Xrandr in it.

Just realize and remember, that's not global but just for your user. If you create a second user, you'd need to put a copy of that .xprofile into their user folder too.
