If Linux went away, what would you use?
10 day poll, and no re-voting, so choose carefully.

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
If linux went away, I'd switch over to a Mac. Why? Because automatic updates for Windows 10 "suck" since they seem to have a tendency to break things. With updates from Microsoft, they're worse than Malware or Viruses because Microsoft's updates seem to have been built with Murphy's Law in mind (if anything can go wrong, sooner later, they will). I have absolutely NO trust in any products from Microsoft now.

Ummm... aren't Chrome OS and Android both Linux (i.e. use a Linux kernel however modified or customized it may be)?!?!?!
...and now that I think about it, Mac and IOS are "almost" Linux as well (descendants of BSD IIRC)!...

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
I lied and put "Other" thinking "FreeBSD" or something similar, but BSDs are too primitive w/o adding some linux components (like a browser?) so I'd probably go back to Win7, which I had pretty thoroughly beaten into submission.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!

Haha, whoops! That is true, I'll edit the poll. I just wanted to give more choice, not thinking if it was Linux-based or not.Reorx wrote:Ummm... aren't Chrome OS and Android both Linux (i.e. use a Linux kernel however modified or customized it may be)?!?!?!
Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
If Linux disappeared i'd likely end up with Craniotomy Stable V1.0, as it would do my head in trying to make another choice
Seriously - prob WIN7, but that or OSX would still rankle!

Considering the limited options it would be Windows; I don't consider myself worthy of The Mac Experience

At this point, geez... Maybe I'd just walk away from computers on a personal basis.

Haha, at this point it is kinda getting that way.Portreve wrote:At this point, geez... Maybe I'd just walk away from computers on a personal basis.

I don't see, that the question is about anything, which is likely to happen.
Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
I'd probably try my luck with ReactOS.
Cosmo., it's a game. No one thinks it's going to happen. But most people like to think about impossible things and compare their solutions for hypothetical problems.

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
I would probably go to one of the BSDs. As I have in Linux, I would probably install VirtualBox and install a few other OSes there. I might try Gnu-Hurd, although I don't think it is actually ready for mainstream.

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
I have it running in VirtualBox. Some things work, a lot of things don't. It crashes or locks up fairly regularly. I play with it partially out of curiosity, and partly because I hope it becomes a real alternative for those Linux users who need to run just one or two Windows programs.Moem wrote:I'd probably try my luck with ReactOS.

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
Reluctantly and it is most definitely reluctantly I have chosen Windows. Probably not 10, I still have an 8.1 CD. I am not familiar with any other operating systems so that was my only choice. However having used Linux Mint Cinnamon for four months using 18.1 and 2 and updated to 3 today, I dread having to revert to Windows. I do boot up Windows once a week to keep the anti/v and other updates done. I still have W10 on my laptop (SONY VAIO) but only use for Skype for contacting family members at weekends. Eventually, when I have the 'courage' I will gpart the laptop disc and install Linux.

Best wishes,

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
Both Windows and Mac would not be an option for me. Windows always has been something of a beta product, but by the time SP1 was rolled out it was a (somewhat) finished product - with Win10 it is a perpetual beta. As for Mac ... I cannot abide by a system that does not have proper Delete and Backspace keys.
I think I could move to FreeBSD without too much trouble, headache, and heartache. I might even make it with Redox or Reactos.

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
I chose other. I would continue to use linux as long as it worked on the hardware. An outdated linux, is more than likely still more secure than windows. Security holes can be fixed by removal of the internet.

Some sort of BSD I suppose.
