Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
Mac, I think. That way I still get to have *Nix.
BSD isn't usable enough for me now.
(That is, since we're assuming a hypothetical 'Linux goes away' future, I'm assuming that future also involves my being able to afford the Apple universe! Otherwise I'd probably be forced to go Windows.)

I chose 'other'.
Frankly, I dont know what I would do. I guess I would consider retirement and just restock my fishing gear and move to somewhere and fish every day on a long pier. I could never run windows or mac software. I would feel so dirty running that stuff.

Most likely a BSD version.
@moem, as I see what ReactOS is after 21 years, I don't think that will ever be a real replacement for whatever OS.

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
My OS build with other kernel like kfreebsd did.
Seriously, haven't you learn anything from Debian? They've based on linux & other one kfreebsd.
Even Linux bought away it's not gonna stop debian growing.
They've kfreebsd that use unix kernel as freebsd in their sleeves.

Windows, begrudgingly. Prefer MacOs but refuse to pay the outrageous 'Apple tax' again.
Poll was better before - ChromeOs and Android certainly are different operating systems from 'Linux' (i.e. GNU/Linux for the pedants) regardless of what kernel they use.

I think it was set aside for a number of years. But they are actively developing it now.Bolle1961 wrote:@moem, as I see what ReactOS is after 21 years, I don't think that will ever be a real replacement for whatever OS.

Other:
If Linux went away, then the Mint Team would refactor their project based on BSD.
The point is, FOSS doesn't die that easily. It will reproduce itself.

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
"If Linux went away, what would you use ?" Is like asking "If the internet went away, what would you use ? " Most of the big servers rest on Linux, without them the world of internet would not be the same anymore, it is the backbone of internet.
May be would give a try to BSB or some other exotic creations. Anyway someone would come quickly with something to replace it. Nature abhors a vacuum.

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
I would build a Hackintosh and run macOS. Windows has always irritated the crap out of me and Win10 looks like an absolute nightmare to me.

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
I'd start from the assumption that every Linux developer would go over to BSD. I would then follow them to BSD, happy in the knowledge that these people would finally make BSD user-friendly!
Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
I would go back to some to some flavor of Ubuntu.
Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
If Linux 'went away', whatever that means, there would not be any flavours of Ubuntu.majpooper wrote:I would go back to some to some flavor of Ubuntu.

Maybe Ubuntu Windows
Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
I'd probably throw out my computer completely

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
Hopefully the full desktop I expect google to debut in 2-3 years. Failing that, BSD, or Mac if I came into a lot of money.
Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?
Hopefully we'll still have the option to choose.
Who knows maybe systemd will assimilate linux.
Potential options:
OS/2 in some form.
BSD in some form.

I would refurbish an old IBM AIX server and reuse it. THE BEST SYSTEM EVER
