Update from 18.2 to 18.3

Post by mellobob » Fri Dec 01, 2017 5:38 pm

Just wondering how long it should be before I see this option in update manager. I've made sure I have the latest sources by doing an update, but the Edit tab doesn't show any update. Oh, and I have changed the repositories as well, but that hasn't made a difference (just tried some US and Canadian ones).

Well, yes ... that's what I thought. But it just isn't there. Not in the update manager or from the cmd line:

Code: Select all

Is there a magic incantation?

It should show up In the update manager menu edit selection.

I don't have it any more because I updated last week.

I also noticed that you have to restart or refresh update manager after performing an apt update.

The instructions are here

Hello, mellobob.

Please, check whether your software package mint-upgrade-info is version 1.1.0, because the information on the upgrade path from Mint 18.x to 18.3 has been added in mint-upgrade-info 1.1.0.
There are several was of verifying the installed package version. Here is one of them: Inside a terminal window execute

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy mint-upgrade-info
The screen output of this commandline will reveal which version is present on your system.
Please, post the screen output of apt-cache policy mint-upgrade-info

Uhm. Hardly dare ask so, but ...
You are aware that the option to upgrade your system to Linux Mint 18.3 will be displayed in the Edit menu of Update Manager as a dedicated action item?!
You have to select the item in the Edit menu, in case you wish to upgrade.
Update Manager is not going to display the upgrade option inside the list of updatable software packages.

Regards,
Karl

Thanks for the suggestions. No luck though.

bob$ apt-cache policy mint-upgrade-info
mint-upgrade-info:
Installed: 1.1.0
Candidate: 1.1.0
Version table:
*** 1.1.0 500
500 http://muug.ca/mirror/linuxmint/packages sonya/main amd64 Packages
500 http://muug.ca/mirror/linuxmint/packages sonya/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

And my current version:

bob$ cat /etc/issue
Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya \n \l

Using apt I still get:
bob$ sudo apt dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

And, yes, I'm aware of the process with update manager. I start update manager from the menu. Just to confirm that this is the right program it is MintUpdate version 5.2.9 (from help->about). Next, just to be sure I select <refresh>. Then I open the <edit> menu and it gives me a bunch of options, mostly grayed out. I'd attach a screenshot but it doesn't appear to be possible to take a shot of a menu since when you open the screenshot program the menu goes away :? But, that edit menu does NOT have a upgrade version option.

I have a second computer running with the same software for my wife and it shows the same issues.

I've changed my repository info again, but still no luck.

Hope someone has a suggestion!!!!

Grasping at straws here, try changing the 'main' repo to http://packages.linuxmint.com
Screenshot at 2017-12-02 13-17-19.png
That's what mine always defaults to.

Okay (well not okay) ... I reset my sources to the default and get the same as you. Still no update version option.

I also enabled the Romeo option, refreshed and tried again. Still no new version.

This is getting depressing. It really shouldn't be that hard.

Ummm, would any of the settings in update manager effect this? I have edit->update Policy set to update everything.

preferences->levels are set to include everything except "dangerous"
preferences->options everything is checked.

I just don't know what else to check.

Have you rebooted the computer since trying all of this?

Just as an fyi I don't use update manager.

I use sudo mintupdate-tool upgrade -l12345 -ry which does all levels regardless what's set in update manager.

I don't understand either why this is so difficult :?

Okay, tired you cmd line suggestion:

Same problem:

Code: Select all

bob$ sudo mintupdate-tool upgrade -l12345 -ry
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Any more ideas? Is there something in the apt stuff that should indicate a new dist being available?

!
I'm wondering if this is part of the reason. Nothing in my edit menu is greyed out.

Are you sure you're looking at the edit options in update manager carefully - are you sure you're not overlooking it :?:

If there were some sort of magic involved here, someone would have spilled the beans by now :?

I just did this:
Screenshot at 2017-12-02 23-49-21.png
After choosing install updates I ended up with
upgrade.jpg
from the edit menu

It's a poor second picture, but it was taken with my phone then cropped and exported from gimp which I never use :?

It's not recommended to run 'dist-upgrade' on Mint as it can cause problems I'm told.

I just checked again. I DO NOT have that option in my update manager edit menu. I have the option options.

I checked via synaptic and the package mint-upgrade-info has been installed. Just to see, I asked synaptic to reinstall the package. No problems. No help either.

The file /usr/share/doc/mint-upgrade-info/changelog.gz starts off with the lines:

mint-upgrade-info (1.1.0) sylvia; urgency=medium

* Open upgrade paths towards Mint 18.3 Cinnamon/MATE

-- Clement Lefebvre <root@linuxmint.com> Mon, 27 Nov 2017 14:53:22 +0000

So, yes, my system knows it is possible to upgrade.

Next, I've looked at /usr/share/mint-upgrade-info/sonya and the file info is:

[general]
target_name = "Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia"
target_codename = sylvia
editions = cinnamon, mate

So, it appears the info is there.

Perhaps I should take this to https://github.com/linuxmint/Mate/issues ?

Far as I know, dist-upgrade is pretty much the same as doing it from the update-manager. And, that would be my preference. But since neither method does anything it really doesn't matter :)

That is strange indeed.

Does aptitude search ~U|wc -lreturn a count other than 0 (zero)

zero is what is returned.

I've posted this topic to the github folks. Maybe they have something to add. Hopeful.
