[Solved] No audio with Windows 7 in Virtualbox

Post by Mazda81 »

I have Windows 7 running as guest OS in Virtualbox with LM 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit as host.
I have no audio in Windows 7 which shows "no audio devices are installed"
Virtualbox Manager shows audio as pulseaudio for the Windows 7 VM.
I also have Xubuntu as a VM in Virtualbox and the audio works fine with that machine.
I only need Windows 7 to work with my Garmin navigation device so audio isn't essential but it would be nice to have it working.

Anybody else had this problem?

Which audio controller have you set in the VM settings of the guest machine?

Hi Cosmo,
Settings in Virtualbox [before the VM is running] are as follows:
Host audio driver = Pulseaudio
Audio controller = Intel HD audio

When I run the VM these settings are greyed out and I get the following error message.
"No audio devices could be opened selecting the NULL audio backend resulting in no sound being audible"

Error ID Host audio not responding.

At least the red X on the speaker icon has now gone.

Try if the ICH AC 97 controller helps. (I don't use W7, so I cannot judge.)

I tried the ICH AC97 setting but if didn't work. I managed to find the audio controller in devices in Windows 7 & it said no driver was installed.
I allowed Windows to search for the missing driver & it found and installed it. The audio is now working.

Thanks
