Customizing Workspace [SOLVED]

Post by Dinosaur1946 »

Hi All

Linux Mint 17.3
This may seem like a really dump question, but browsing for hours has not got me an answer.

How do I remove icons from one workspace and put them on another ?

When I click on workspace 2 it is identical to workspace 1.
If I delete an icon from 1 it is also gone from the 2.

I read about dragging from one to the other, but none show what has to be done to do so.

I don't think that's a dumb question, at all.
Workspaces, as I understand and use them, are different from each other only in the open/running programs that they show. Not the desktop icons. Those are, as you've found, present on all workspaces (or none of them).
But it's possible, and even likely, that there is a way to achieve what you've been trying to do. Just not on Cinnamon without any special additions, as far as I'm aware.

Hi All

Moem, thanks for the reply.
Does that mean this it IS available in Mate , and how difficult is it to swap to Mate on an existing install ?

I wouldn't know. Never tried it.

A new installation is the safest way. Adding another DE to an existing install can lead to unpredictable problems, and is not recommended unless you know what you're doing.

Hi All

The intent of this was to only allow certain icons to be accessible by machine operators.
I didn't want to create another user, as recompiling my application and copying it to the allowed area became messy
and time consuming.

Finally solved it by putting a new folder on the desktop (Desktop-2) and changing permissions on it.
Then moved all my restricted icons to it, and by maximizing the window it is just like having
another workspace with dedicated icons.

AFAIK the only Mint DE that'll do that is KDE, using Activities.

I know this is an older thread, but I just discovered this "problem" today. I'd love to have different workspaces with different icons on them. However, it looks like I'm locked into a workaround....bugga!
Please take this as a vote for the dev's to develop something like this for the future.... :D
