[SOLVED] Webcam no longer being recognized

Post by JerryF »

The USB Logitech Webcam C110 that I have for my home desktop used to work in Skype, Cheese, and some other apps.

Today when my partner tried to video chat with me using Skype, the webcam is no longer recognized. I checked the audio & video settings and this is what I got:
Shutter-006.jpg
It recognizes the audio but not the video.

In Cheese, I get this:
Shutter-007.jpg
I attached it to my laptop and I get the same results. I loaded a previous kernel 4.4.0-104-generic that I know the webcam worked with and again, same results.

I tried it in my Windows Virtualbox and it is fine. Both the audio and video work.

Here is some info that may help:

No problems with my Logitech C310 on the latest Skype version.

Thoughts....

They did release a new updated version of Skype this week, 8.13.0.2. Did you install the update? I noticed improved audio with my calls with another Mint user with same cam and they also installed the update.

Since this newest version 8.x.... of Skype (over past several months) uses web client, it could be a browser problem. Which browser are you using as default?

Because the cam is also not working with cheese, it might be driver.

Try installing guvcview, and see if that app works. It's in Software Manager for install.

What is the last Kernel you remember using that had the cam working?

Hi ClixTrix, thanks for your reply.

Yes, I installed the Skype update on the desktop Mint 18.3 Cinnamon. The webcam was working with Skype 8.13.0.2.

I'm using Google Chrome. Oddly, when I use Skype from Chrome, it recognizes the webcam and can make a video call.

Just installed guvcview and that app recognizes the webcam. I took a picture with guvcview and it was fine. I then went to Cheese and it now recognizes the webcam. I also took a pic with Cheese and it was fine.

Unfortunately, Skype app, Skype version 8.13.0.2 is still not recognizing the webcam.

I believe it was 4.4.0-103-generic

OK...so it was working with the new version of Skype and then stopped working. You didn't have cheese working, and installing guvcview got cheese working.

Suggestion: Uninstall Skype and reinstall the latest version with the cam connected, so it goes through that initial setup again. Hope that suggestion makes sense.

Thanks ClixTrix.

Yes, that makes perfect sense. I uninstalled Skype through Synaptic Manager, marking it for complete removal, then rebooted.

I installed Skype and it didn't go through the set up. So I uninstalled Skype again.

I found that the folder /home/jerry/.config/skypeforlinux was still there, so I deleted it, then reinstalled Skype.

Skype went through the setup process but still doesn't recognize the webcam.

EDIT: I tried uninstalling Skype, including the deletion of the folder /home/jerry/.config/skypeforlinux. I then installed Skype from Flatpak (flathub). Still doesn't recognize the webcam.

I wonder if you're not loading a necessary module. I ran lsmod after staring Skype looking for "video" names and here's my results for comparison. It was from a fresh boot of the system.

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep video
Module Size Used by
uvcvideo 102400 0
videobuf2_vmalloc 16384 1 uvcvideo
videobuf2_memops 16384 1 videobuf2_vmalloc
videobuf2_v4l2 28672 1 uvcvideo
videobuf2_core 40960 2 uvcvideo,videobuf2_v4l2
videodev 204800 3 uvcvideo,videobuf2_core,videobuf2_v4l2
media 45056 2 uvcvideo,videodev

Edit: I'm having problems with the latest version of skypeforlinux on my Mint 17.3 system with older kernel. This is what's happening....

Jerry, I don't know if there are more problems with older kernels, but you might try backing-up to the prior version 8.11.04 for a test.

Edit2: This post over there also leads me to suggest that the later versions might not detect all cams.

Just found a link to prior versions: https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/
Will try it after this posting.

Just installed Skype version 8.11.0.4 and the webcam works!

In Software Manager, I set Skype to be ignored in updates.

Thanks so much ClixTrix!!!

Thanks also for that other problem. You helped me with Cheese not recognizing the webcam too and it got fixed when you advised me to install guvcview!

I wouldn't recommend the older version of Skype, as they have released newer versions since the problem release back in January. If you're having a new problem, I would create a new post and explain the problem.

I tried
viewtopic.php?f=42&t=265529
but the problem is the same: skype doesn't recognize LifeCam VX-3000 video, voice is ok. Cheese recognizes it well.

How about if you replace v4l1compat.so using v4l2convert.so in the /usr/local/bin/skypeforlinux file?

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l2convert.so /usr/bin/skypeforlinux
To check if your system sees the camera:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep video

Re: [SOLVED] Webcam no longer being recognized

After many unsuccessful attempts Skype for linux 8.17 still doesn't recognize 10 years old LifeCam VX-3000. Then I tried new camera Genius FaceCam 1000X and Skype recognized it immediately. (Lenovo ThinkCentre M57 64 bit, 2007, Linux Mint 17.3 and 18.3).
The second problem: I cannot find the Skype installation for notebook Lenovo T60 (32 bit, 2008, Linux mint 17.3) because Skype (Microsoft) has cancelled support for 32 bit.

Then I found Ghetto Skype. After simple installation, it works on all my old machines, with my old camera and with other Skype contacts. :D

Thanks for your support,
Josip
