date for fix for Spectre

Post by wpshooter »

I see that the Meltdown security issue has been fixed via kernel updates to Linux Mint.

When is it likely that the Spectre security issue(s) will be fixed or is this something that
can only really be assured of being fixed via purchasing a new unflawed processor / computer,
whenever that might be possible ?

Thanks.

Your browser(s) should already be patched. Which one(s) are you using?

I am using Firefox, all updates applied.

However, the Meltdown & Spectre detection tools, say that Meltdown is mitigated
BUT both of the Spectre variants are NOT mitigated.

According to what I read elsewhere, the Spectre part of these problems has not been fixed yet
and I am wondering how long it is going to be before fixed, if ever, i.e sounds like they've got
a real tiger by the tail with that one !!!

Thanks.

Well, that is a very good start because for most of us, our browser is the largest attack surface. And a fully-updated Firefox is not vulnerable to Spectre, so that road has effectively been blocked.
With regards to the rest of the system, someone else probably knows more than I do.

That would be my guess.

Has this gotten to Linux Mint yet ?

Today is Jan. 16th and the meltdown / Spectre checker still says that my system is vulnerable to Spectre 1 and Spectre 2.
I have all available updates applied.

Thanks.

Not yet - it appears the Spectre patched kernels are currently in testing.....
