Shell scripting. Simple and yet very powerful. From there on it's more or less easy to dive into more complex languages. If you continue to use Linux exclusively you sooner or later will have to learn shell scripting anyway. You are a Windows convert? Fine. Convert all 10'000 *.ICO files you have on your harddrive to the *.PNG format. Convert all 2000 Word *.DOC files you have to HTML. Convert all your *.BMP pictures to *.JPG ... These are all tasks that you would typically use a shell script for (who on Earth and in their right mind would want to convert 1000+ files by hand anyway??).
