Re: Mint 18.3 - Have you upgraded the Kernel or kept the original one from Install?

The kernel on all four of my computers, since the newest computer is a 2013 model and the oldest computer is a 2010 model, is the default install kernel 4.10.0-38 which came with Mint 18.3 Xfce. Everything works like a charm and I don't kernel hop for the simple reason of; "If it ain't broke and everything is working like a well oiled machine, then don't fix it or fiddle with it".

Yes I have...twice in several days...running Cinnamon 18.3 64bit.

Updated Kernel 4.10.0-42 (working fine) to 4.13.0-26 which resulted in the Black screen of Death...had to Roll-back.

Today Kernel 4.13.0-31 was released...I installed it and it works great. Being new to Linux I have learnt that some Kernels have bugs and a simple Roll-Back is the best way to fix it...then just wait for the next Kernel Update.

I have my 12 laptops upgraded to 4.13.32 or so. The numbers keep changing on the install readouts. Everything still working. All cinnamon on machines from 2006 to 2015.

I upgraded my wife's PC from 4.10 to 4.13 for the Meltdown security patch. She has a three year old HP running an Intel i7 on LM 18.3 I did a fresh install I believe to 18.2 for her a few months ago which started out with 4.10. Typically I don't upgrade kernels just security updates.

I am now using 4.13.0-31 without any problems at all... Perhaps I am just lucky! :-)

Give me some of that luck. I can't get 4.13.0-31 installed on Mint 18.3 KDE.

It must be time for a backup and clean install to test it again.

Edit: HAHAHAHA! More fool me. I run tmpfs because I don't want my NVMe clobbered by temporary files and logging. I haven't given tmpfs enough RAM. Reboot and try again...

Three machines on 4.4.0-112, one on 4.13.0-31. All because of Meltdown....

Well, I am also running 4.13.0-31-generic, but the other day I noticed LM pushed out a new CPU microcode release that basically goes back to a prior version because of issues with the preceding (i.e. December 2017 update) microcode release.

So far, given the hardware I'm running, all seems to be well.

Been a while since anyone added to this thread so I thought I would. I am still on 18.3 and I have been using kernel 4.15.0-33 since it came out. I have had no issues. I am using an AMD FX-6300 six core processor and a Radeon HD 7770 graphics card with a MSI motherboard. I like to stay a couple of kernels back so I can check on issues that occur on the latest ones. I think it is best to use the later kernels since security fixes are usually included with them.
