device descriptor read/64, error -32

The error can indicate too much power draw from the USB ports. Try disconnecting devices and/or use a powered external USB Hub.

Thanks a lot my friend
Issue is that I have nothing connect on my USBs, there is a built in camera which is not working
and I though that this was the problem.
Anyway thanks for your time and the link.

C u around!!!

OK, let's see what's drawing power. Please run the following command from Terminal and post back the results. Note, using sudo will require the admin password.

Code: Select all

Re: dmesg results

Post by ClixTrix »

Well, the original post had the problem device on USB 1-1 Port 5.

The listing you posted back appears to be cut-off at the top. However, it does show something powered at Port 5.

Hub Port Status:
Port 1: 0000.0100 power
Port 2: 0000.0100 power
Port 3: 0000.0100 power
Port 4: 0000.0100 power
Port 5: 0000.0103 power enable connect
Port 6: 0000.0100 power
Port 7: 0000.0100 power
Port 8: 0000.0100 power

I don't see the USB Cam, which might be the problem device. Can you disable the USB Cam in BIOS and recheck for the DMESG errors?

I do see a USB RTS5129 Card Reader Controller at Bus 1 Device 3.

Hi again Clix and thank you for your time
I did it my friend. I disable my build in web camera , i found something "Integrate NIC" in BIOS menu and I supposed that this sould be the cam!! :D
Actually I was pretty sure that this was the problem but unfortunately some results fro DMESG come back.
Yes, its true are not some like original post , I dont know why. Anyways check below results after web cam disample.

Integrated NIC in BIOS is probably the ethernet port.

I'd like to get more info on your system. Could you please run the following command from Terminal and post back the results.

The current BIOS for your system is A18. You have A13. It's possible the cam problem is linked to a BIOS problem.

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/ ... 23/drivers

I don't see the Ethernet listed as a Network Card on that list. My check of specs for the laptop does show a 10/100 Ethernet. So, disable of the NIC is the Ethernet port.

I would expect disable of the Cam to be designated as Video Camera in the BIOS.

Hello again Clix!!!

I downloaded the BIOS updates ( I really have not any idea that there are updates for BIOS also) , but is .exe,
I can't run it.
I have to tell you that my camera didn't work even before , I mean pre-Mint installation and every time I start up my Laptop I have the same msg in the star up screen.

Any chance the BIOS update added an option to disable the Cam?

Please run the following command from Terminal and post back the results (this produces a short list of USB devices). The prior list was cutoff at the top, and I just want to double-check what Linux sees.

Code: Select all

lsusb
Also, is there any ability in BIOS to disable USB hubs/ports?

I'm getting those messages also.
viewtopic.php?f=49&t=264971
Purging the microcode package seems to have reduced them. The "cable" messages come and go.

It's been a kernel bug for years, perhaps because, as near as I can tell, the USB development for the linux kernel has been a "social justice" project for a long time.
Edit: the bug has been around since 2007:

PS: a better title to your original post would assist in you getting answers. "dmesg results" could be about almost anything.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Good morning Guys
Here is usb list

Bus 002 Device 003: ID 8087:07da Intel Corp.
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bda:0129 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTS5129 Card Reader Controller
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

In BIOS menu there are three options regarding USD
  • USB emulation - Enable
    USB Powershare - Enable
    USB Wake Support - Disable
I changed all of them to opposite option but problem remain!!

But if all this is a "bug" so that means that no any problem really exist correct?

Next time I would try to be more specific but my problem is that I don't really know what I have to deal with
Sorry for that and thanks one again for your help guys

Well, here's my thinking and options. I'm assuming the cam is the problem as you stated it wasn't working prior to Linux. However, it could also be a motherboard USB hub problem or bad ribbon cable.

The power error is probably due to the dead cam, which might be causing a short or power-draw problem. I can only think of two possible options:

1) Disable hardware in BIOS. However, there doesn't appear to be any method to disable either the cam or the USB hubs/ports from BIOS.

2) Remove or Replace the defective Cam. I have located a procedure, but it isn't something I would recommend to a novice without the proper tools/skills. A local laptop repair shop would be a better choice.

As for the cost of the cam, it's not an expensive item.

If the dmesg errors aren't causing any real system problems, you could simply ignore them. I'm not sure if the other USB ports are working or not. That you would need to test.

If there is more to the problem, it might be possible to blacklist the cam or the hub.

I'm not sure if Flemur's suggestion is applicable due to the cam being a known hardware failure problem.
