cd burner?

Post by jasminedam »

I can't find nautilus cd burner. gnomebaker don't work. brasero don't work. I miss k3b burning program. I can go back to centos 5 and use k3b or other linux distro's that have k3b. :(

Hello jasminedam and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums,

You can install k3b in Mint no problem will work fine - in a terminal type this to install

Code: Select all

sudo apt install k3b
or you can use synaptic package manager and do a search for k3b. I use xfburn much of the time and it works great for general cd/dvd burning also. good luck.
with linux you have many choices. others may suggest other burners they like also.

Try Xfburn. My favourite for all non-KDE desktops.

K3B works wonderfully also in a non-KDE environment. If you are used to it, use it.

k3b is listed in the software manger of Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3
I just went to the software store and installed it no problem.

k3b is one of the first things I install after doing a new Linux installation. It is available for all versions of Linux Mint. I'm guessing that you may not be familiar with installing programs on Linux Mint, else you probably would have found k3b already. Most beginners (I am told) prefer to install software with Software Manager, but I prefer to use Synaptic. Others like the command line, but I usually stick to GUI applications when they are available. Welcome to Linux Mint, jasminedam!

I am also a big fan of k3b, I especially like it for burning bootable CD/DVDs for use on older machines that won't boot from a USB. I am currently on Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3.
It's been so long, don't even remember how I installed it. It's in both the Software Manager and the Synaptic Package Manager. I probably used one of those.

Xfburn. K3b is useless.

Your post is incomplete. You missed to say, that k3b is useless for you. As a general rating this is simply wrong, what gets proven by the disks, which I and many, many other users have successfully burned.

This isn't Twitter. If you're going to dispute the recommendation of three senior users, you should explain why. Without that, you're not helping the OP.

What does this even mean? Without data your post is useless.

I have been using K3b on a regular basis for four years now without any problems. It comes default on KDE. The only time I have had problems burning a CD or DVD was because of certain media brands. My current choice for that is Memorex DVD-R. They have never failed me.

The good news for you is that if you are running Linux Mint 17.x or Linux Mint 18.x, k3b is right there in the software manager. Just click on the icon for the software manager, and click on k3b and install it. It is very quick and easy.

leucocyte wrote: Thu Mar 08, 2018 8:17 am Anyway, for newbie and basic tasks I would recommend stuff like Brasero and for more experienced users and more advanced tasks K3B.
By the way, both are front end for quite the same command line tools (ie : cdrtools/cdrkit, cdrskin, growisofs, cdrdao).
Now THAT was very useful. I learned something. Thank you.

As others have noted, k3b is available in the repositories, but also be aware the downloading a single KDE-based application in a non-KDE desktop environment will additionally install many KDE base libraries as well.

Some users are sensitive to that, others don't mind. Your call. :)

k3b will not accept my dvd's and in mint 19 when I insert dvd in dvd drawer system says blank dvd what do I want to do with it.

When I do get k3b to accept dvd will not burn movies/music from youtube can't remember exactly what the problem was

also tells me not enough room on dvd 4.7 gigabit and only want to burn less than 3 gigabit's of music/movies

maybe it works for y'all but its a bummer for me same for brassero

I don't use k3b

Jasmine and Tinker, maybe this link below will help you out. It offers some more detailed solutions when a newbie encounters problems installing K3b in LinuxMInt19.

viewtopic.php?f=90&t=279918

Xfburn is the easiest to use cd/dvd burner program for newbies who dont want any hassle with installing additional packages . Install of Xfburn is simple. And using Xfburn is dead simple as well.

K3b has many more features though and is certainly the best equipped cd/ dvd burning software available. But it can offer more than is needed for the casual user and installing K3b can be quite a hassle sometimes. I didnt succeed in installing it. I combine Xfburn and Handbrake. Both dont need addditional packages to run and are very user friendly for beginners.
