Play on Linux installation causing Update Manager problem in Cinnamon 18.3

Post by After8Minty » Thu Mar 08, 2018 12:26 pm

:?: I am getting a red cross in the shield (presumably the update manager) that sits on the panel in Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon. When I hover the mouse over this the following message appears 'Could not refresh the list of updates'. What is causing this and what can I do to remedy it? I have tried refresh which temporarily removes the cross but within 10 minutes it's back again.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
Copy/paste it in your reply in full.

About half-a-dozen things can cause this. After you have posted the output Pjotr requested, try a reboot. Sometimes it's as simple as that.

You can just update everything and enjoy the green tick that comes afterwards. 8) 8)

Sorry Pjtor, I have been trying to resolve another issue and have just found your reply.

Please note that I am an 83 year old newbie so you will need a lot of patience in dealing with me  Looking at the long list that follows it may be something I have recently updated but who knows, I certainly don't!

Here's the output you asked for:-

Hi Pbear,

Thanks for your suggestion and I tried rebooting but it didn't change things.

Only had you try reboot because it's the simplest fix if it works. If not, we've got real work to do.

Looking at your update output, the obvious thing is all the Wine related items. They're in improper form and that's probably the problem. By contrast, I just checked a test box with Wine 3.0 installed and when I run Pjotr's command I get a single Wine-related line which updates fine.

How long ago did you install Wine, by what method and what are you using it for?

Hi Pbear,

I can't recall the exact date when I installed Wine but I guess it would have been at the same time I installed Linux 18.3 Cinnamon so that takes us back to around the second week of February but can't truly remember. I installed Wine because I understand it is needed in part by PlayOnLinux and as most of my experience has been with Windows and MacX where I have been accustomed to using Microsoft Office I thought it would be good to have it on Linux Mint as well. In fact, since I installed Office through PlayOnLinux it has worked extremely well.

I can of course always attempt to refresh Update Manager when the red cross appears in the shield but if there is a way to avoid this then I would very much appreciate any help that can be offered.

Frankly, I don't see how you were able to install Office. Please run inxi -Sr and post the output here. This will tell us which repositories your system is trying to use. Put the output in code tags, which is the fifth icon from the left above the text entry window. Makes it easier to read and avoids run-on posts.

As I mentioned before, I used PlayOnLinux to install Office and during the process it did warn me that it needed other files which it would install at the same time.

Yes, that's exactly how one uses the code tags.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with Play on Linux. Tried it twice. Wouldn't install my version of Office (2003), so I went back to using Wine by itself. Importantly, PoL uses Wine, but I don't know details, nor do I have a working installation of it to compare with your outputs. If I were in your shoes, I'd uninstall both Wine and PoL, then start over installing only PoL (as that apparently worked for you), which then installs Wine versions as needed. I assume you would have to redo the Office installation also, but that should be no more difficult than it was the first time.

Another option would be to uninstall Wine and PoL, then give LibreOffice a try for a month or two. It's a pretty good suite and might be enough for your purposes. If so, would make your Linux life much easier. If not, you can come back to Wine/PoL, by which time you'll be more familiar with the operating system.

Third option would be to continue the thread and hope someone drops in with PoL experience. If you want to go that route, edit the thread title in the first post to say something like "Play on Linux installation causing Update Manager problem in Cinnamon 18.3".

Sorry can't be more help. Good luck.

I use Ms Office on my Windows 10 Desktop and Apple Mac notebook in conjunction with online support for a few clients so this remains my main choice through convenience. Having said that I have also tried to encourage people to give Libre Office a go due to it being a free alternative but you try convincing those who are working in a Microsoft environment that it is just as good! The purpose of me moving across into the Linux field is that I aim to convince my clients that they don't have to cling onto the mainstream systems in order to run their popular software and this is why I have installed Ms Office 2007 in Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon. However, I discovered that It would only install through PoL which no doubt is why I now have this issue with Update Manager. There is of course the alternative that you suggest but if I have to uninstall Ms Office I will have to go all through the process of contacting Microsoft to re-activate it ... the product key will only activate once. I'm a stubborn old 83 year old so I think I'll wait to see if any other ideas come to light but thanks for the effort you have put into this, rest assured it is much appreciated! Incidentally, you may be surprised to learn that Ms Office 2007 is running well in the Linux environment so at least this has been of value to me as part of the learning curve.
