Oh don't be such a grouch :)

Double click on the speaker on the taskbar, a volume control window will open...

Check to see that the levels for PCM and/or Front are all the way to the top. From then on, the taskbar speaker slider (or media buttons if your computer has them) should be easily used to give a comfortable or in your case, louder sound!!!
