[Solved] Frustration is maxing out / needing encouragement

Post by Pat D » Sat Mar 24, 2018 2:27 pm

viewtopic.php?f=213&t=266326

I'm running 2 18.3 Cinnamon systems here, and they're both giving me nothing but problems.
Am I dealing with hardware and Linux issues with both machines?
Is there any way to find out?

Open the terminal and paste in inxi -Fxz and press enter (on both computers). Paste the results back here inside of code tags.

The "Otherbox" has it's own raft of issues, one of which is constant loss of characters in the display. It once had Ubuntu Mate on it and had that same problem with it, too.

Thanks. really hoping you can come up with ideas here. :D

On both boxes, try these measures, in this order:

1. Disable all visual effects in Cinnamon:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... n-Cinnamon
(item 7.1, right column)

2. Roll the kernel back to the latest kernel of the 4.4 series (currently 4.4.0-116). Boot from it (it's under the header Advanced in the Grub bootloader menu) and remove all installed kernels from all higher series.

3. Try another graphics driver:

(item 6, left column)

Pjotr, I know you don't approve of Grub-Customizer; could you tell me how to take those kernels out of grub2 ?
And after doing step 3, the resultant output of inxi -G :

Code: Select all

devlin@MainBox ~ $ inxi -G
Graphics: Card: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
           Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
           Resolution: 1680x1050@59.95hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Desktop
           GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 17.2.8
Is this what you expected?

Kernels:
Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels

Intel driver:
See the note (in italics) at the end of item 6, to which I referred.

If the problem at that URL was the script not running - you just didn't pass it the parameter it wanted. When you did pass the param, the script worked.

Was that the problem or was there another issue?

AfterI change the graphics driver, I get this result for the grep you mention:

I don't know, but I don't see any reason to think it's a problem - I ran that 'grep' and the output looked almost exactly the same as yours. I don't run a proprietary driver, dunno if that matters.

I got the same "error" - it doesn't load the driver because it's already loaded, look up above that part.
