Selecting updates manually.

Post by riki »

I have been updating everything that comes through on Levels 1, 2 and 3 (recently quit 4 and 5 to avoid problems) and my question is: should I allow EVERY single update? In other words, for example, if I am running Mate, should I allow a Cinnamon update? Or is a Cinnamon update automatically ignored if one is only running Mate? Can someone clarify, please?

Are you running Mate?
Do you have both Mate and Cin installed?
Why would you want to update one and not the other?

I'm running Xfce and don't see any updates for other desktops ... because they're not installed.

There might be the chance, that there is a Cinnamon library used in the Mate DE. Mark the update and see in the description below, which package will actually be updated. If this is an update for a package, which gets used in Mate, than you should apply the update.

Hello, riki.

Although Flemur had already suggested something this effect in his post, let me state quite clearly:
Linux Mint Update Manager offers updated software packages only for software which has been installed on your system before.
To use your example of Mate and Cinnamon:
Provided on your system the Mate desktop has been installed, but the Cinnamon desktop has not; in this case Update Manager will not offer updating any software packages, which are specific to Cinnamon and which are not present on your system.

Hope this clears it up.

Best regards,
Karl

Yes, I am running Mate, not Cin. Thanks.
