I wonder if it is really freezing or if just the graphics are freezing.
next time you are able to login edit the grub file
# sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
and remove the quiet from the boot command and comment out the splash screen line (put a # in the front of the line).
this will let you see at boot where the system is freezing or timing out...
or at least give us more info.

Just for testing you could turn off USB in the bios (if you can, or at least check its settings) and then test booting the system to see if it is the hardware or the kernel driver causing the problem.

uname -a tells you everything.
if you still have kernel 2.6.27-10 installed boot off it and see if you still get that error.
you can reinstall it from synaptic but you may need to force it because it may complain that a newer one is installed. (bloody computers).
