Sound died after update.

Post by rde »

I updated from 1:8.0-0ubuntu3.8 to 1:8.0-0ubuntu3.9 and my sound died. The sound worked fine the evening before I installed the update.

I updated to Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia after the sound died to see if that would help, but nothing changed.

My sound page shows a dummy output even though the speakers have not been unplugged or turned off.

I am not very computer literate so please be patient with me. My son switched me to Linux from Windows and I have no regrets.

I do not have a sound card. It comes from the motherboard.

A list of recent updates would be useful. Copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here:

Try this:

Roll back to the latest kernel of the 4.4 series:
Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels

Afterwards boot from it (it's under the section Advanced in the Grub bootloader menu).

I loaded 4.4.0-116 instead of the latest because I saw a reported bug on the last few. It didn't change anything. Is there a way to roll back the pulse audio to the previous version? That was the only update that I added when this happened.

rde, from what I have seen, trying to revert the update breaks other stuff.

Please post the output of these 4 commands:
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs

I don't know why it didn't set an active profile. In the terminal, enter:

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo

Then test your sound. If it works, I don't know if this will survive a reboot. If not, let me know and I'll try to find out which file we could add that to in order to make it permanent.

It worked! Thanks.

I went to YouTube after the restart and I have sound again. I tried the test buttons on the sound window and I had nothing there? That doesn't really matter to me. I never used that before.

Thanks for the help. I really appreciate you folks that help us newbies out.

As it happens, my sound also croaked after a pulseaudio update. I read this thread and followed MrEen's guidance. After adjusting the pacmd command to suit my own system, sound was restored and it also survived a reboot. Many thanks for an outstanding solution to a very annoying and unexpected problem.

Thank you MrEen for this help. It fixed my sound issue on Ubuntu 20.04 with my new NUC.
However, I need to rerun this command when I reboot:

Code: Select all

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo
How could I include this command in my boot automatically?
