no sound device on mint 18.3

Post by morc66 »

Hey all; noob here. I have been using mint for a while on other systems... worked fine. Now installed in on a Akoya netbook which had W10... and worked ok. I missed to check the soundcard when going to linux and now I am stuck with a system without sound.

In several places I see fixes .. but they seem not to work. Any one willing to help out?

All I see is a dummy device.

Code: Select all

 ~ $ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...
 ~ $ inxi -A
Audio: Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.10.0-38-generic
solutions that seem to work in other cases didn't work .. (reinstalling alsa)

The netbook is an akoya MD60250 / E2228T

Anyone able to help out?

Run the following in a terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo alsa force-reload
Wait for it to run its course. Reboot. Check if you got sound.

I had problems with audio to. I installed:
Pulseaudio-module-x11,
Pavucontrol and
Ubuntu-restricted-extras.
Now I do not have problems anymore.

Hi morc66, and welcome to the forum.

I'll assume you already tried deleting/moving the files in ~/.config/pulse/

The kernel you're on isn't patched for Meltdown/Spectre, so that's one upgrade that may also fix your sound issue. To determine the best kernel to try, please post the output of inxi -Fxz

Install the latest kernel in the 4.13 series (Update Manager > View > Linux kernels)

If after a reboot there is still no sound card detected, follow these instructions to get and run the alsa script. Post the URL it outputs here.

Well, the first thing to check now is to see if you can do anything with Pavucontrol or is Dummy Output still the only option?

As the 4.13 kernel didn't work for you, I'd suggest trying the latest from the 4.4 series (also patched for Meltdown/Spectre.) Or, maybe try the 4.15.

The only "solution" I've found that involves your Intel Atom x5-Z83xx SoC would have us blacklist the hdmi output, but your system isn't detecting anything else as yet, so that wouldn't work.

If we can find a kernel that gives us an additional listing under !!Soundcards recognised by ALSA, then I'm pretty sure we can get your sound functional. You could just use inxi -A instead of running the script again to see if anything besides HDMI appears.

no. at the moment it is the Intel HDMP/LDP LPE Audio analog stereo device. see inxi output:

Code: Select all

Audio: Card Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio driver: HdmiLpeAudio
           Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.11.0-14-generic

I'm confused. Where are you seeing analog stereo?

Hi,

you must know what SOC is available on this hardware. SOC rt5640 ? SOC rt5645 ? SOC rt5651 ?

After that, you must download UCM files here: https://github.com/plbossart/UCM

You must use dmesg, journalctl or others commands to have informations about your hardware on Linux (sound, ....).

Hi Dupo.

The OP has never returned since their last post six months ago. I'm betting they probably gave up on sound on Linux or Linux in general.

Now that you've revived this thread, I will say I wasn't aware of the issues on these netbooks back then, but now I have gained more knowledge. In this users case their only real hope left would have been running journalctl -k | grep -Ei "snd|sound|audio|multi" in the terminal and hoping the right info came out such as:

Code: Select all

Dez 16 10:30:55 linux-klm2 kernel: [drm] HDaudio controller not detected, using LPE audio instead
Dez 16 10:31:00 linux-klm2 kernel: input: Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio HDMI/DP,pcm=0 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/hdmi-lpe-audio/sound/card0/input11
Dez 16 10:31:00 linux-klm2 kernel: input: Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio HDMI/DP,pcm=1 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/hdmi-lpe-audio/sound/card0/input12
Dez 16 10:31:00 linux-klm2 kernel: input: Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio HDMI/DP,pcm=2 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/hdmi-lpe-audio/sound/card0/input13
Dez 16 10:31:00 linux-klm2 kernel: bytcht_nocodec bytcht_nocodec: snd-soc-dummy-dai <-> media-cpu-dai mapping ok
Dez 16 10:31:00 linux-klm2 kernel: bytcht_nocodec bytcht_nocodec: snd-soc-dummy-dai <-> deepbuffer-cpu-dai mapping ok
Dez 16 10:31:00 linux-klm2 kernel: compress asoc: snd-soc-dummy-dai <-> compress-cpu-dai mapping ok
Dez 16 10:31:00 linux-klm2 kernel: bytcht_nocodec bytcht_nocodec: snd-soc-dummy-dai <-> ssp2-port mapping ok
Dez 16 10:31:46 linux-klm2 kernel: Audio Port: ASoC: no backend DAIs enabled for Audio Port
Then they could use the bytcht_nocodec instructions from the link you gave.

Hope this helps someone in the future.

Hi MrEen,

well, I also got a Medion Akoya netbook (tablet PC) but mine is older (MD 99720/E2212T). I know it is not easy to make them work without problems on Linux. I had to wait 2 years before running my device properly (except for the cameras who are still not recognized) on Linux Mint.

The UCM files are the solution to make the sound work on these devices.

One final comment.

Thanks to @thx-1138, I have found out that PulseAudio 12 has supposedly fixed all these issues that I believe will render the UCM files obsolete.

However, I have no idea if Mint users will see that version of PulseAudio before Mint 20.

Ubuntu 18.04 (on which Mint 19.x is based) came with version 11.1. Ubuntu 18.10 comes with version 12.2. It is possible one of the point releases of Mint 19 could upgrade the version of PulseAudio, but I'm pretty sure that is not how it usually happens, unless Ubuntu were to backport the 12.2 version to 18.04.

Worst case scenario is sometime in 2020 everybody will be fixed that is running the latest Mint. At least, in respect to the SoC issues.

For anyone that really cares, this link covers the bug discussion that involved issues with everything that affects sound (kernel, alsa and pulseaudio.)
