google earth problem

Post by wutsinterweb »

I've tried searching for a solution to this issue, but can't figure out how to term the problem to find the solution.

Google Earth runs but the window for the earth itself is only a 1 inch square and won't expand to the window/screen. This has been a problem for a long time, but I haven't tried to fix it until now. Mint Cinnamon 18.3.

I've been using Mint for over 4 years, but I'm still a slow learner. I have a website: https://pickfetish.com. It is dedicated to guitar/instrument picks.

You probably need to install an older version. See here: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=251204

For future reference: The linux .deb installers are actually still on google earth download server, even though not linked on the page anymore. No need to use 3rd party uploads.
For 7.1.8 I recommend using the non-pro version if there's any issues with Pro. In my case, in the 7.1.8 Pro version 3D mapped buildings don't work, only old 3D models show up. No problems in old "free" version.

7.1.8 Google Earth Pro

7.1.8 Google Earth
32 bit: https://dl.google.com/dl/earth/client/G ... 0_i386.deb
64 bit: https://dl.google.com/dl/earth/client/G ... _amd64.deb

6.2.2 Google Earth, recommended for old hardware (runs on my old laptop with GMA950). Some features may be no longer working, but it works overall.
32 bit: https://dl.google.com/dl/earth/client/g ... 0_i386.deb
64 bit: https://dl.google.com/dl/earth/client/g ... _amd64.deb

Just took a little bit of guesswork with their filename convention

Thanks! It's hard to live without it once you're hooked. This time I'll stash the installers, because they are a double-dyed roaring beyotch to find. Thought I had what I needed a couple of times but nothing worked until now. The pro versions have extreme graphics issues with no clue how to fix. The elusive non-pro works in my old machines.

You have to have Chrome installed but the internet version works really well for me. The first time I ran it it did take awhile but has been fine since.

I apologize, My "Google Earth" was the "sattelite view" on Google Maps, I am unsure if Google Earth is substantially different. My mistake.

isn't that a different version ?????

I want the older version, not with 3D etc ... like the one that runs on windows

I tried installing the pro version for Ubuntu but gives a blank screen
same as the internal Mint version ... (says same version already installed in the former case)

... also is a source of errors whenever I do system updates // which I just ignore

reluctant to delete, by fear of eliminating something needed elsewhere
not that confident yet

It's a standalone application, it generally performs better on older hardware (especially version 6). It also has more features which I believe (not 100% sure though) web version doesn't have. This includes being able to choose the date of satellite imagery, and viewing surface imagery of other solar system bodies, such as the Moon or Mars. You can also view highly zoomable photos of the sky itself from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

I suggest you try one from the links I posted earlier. If current versions don't work for you then try non-pro 7.1.8, or if it also doesn't work for you, try 6.2.2

FWIW, I was running 18.3 LM and proxima's top on the list of ones that might work, did work.

I am now running LM19 and will get around to seeing if I should change GE to any newer version. I know that if it ain't broke, as they say...

Thanks Proxima for posting those links. The "Holy Grail" however appears to be 7.0.x which I've been fruitlessly searching for, as this is, apparently, the one needed for the GMA950 etc. & can only seem to find Windows versions. The later 7.1.x versions run on the Acer but do not render correctly in overhead view; streetview is fine (might be able to fix that, will update if I do).

Sorry for jumping on the OP's thread but this may help others looking for this solution, if anyone can find a source that still works, that is. :)

Hey OP, your problem was the same as me, the small window.
Never mind all those links above just download and install (after purging google-earth first)
this version. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bx0YZ3 ... VkNDQ/view

I've posted this fix a couple of times and suggested a sticky, as for what-ever reason the newest version of google-earth just does not work, I was one of them.

here are a couple of those threads.
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=267103&p=1453528#p1453528
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=251204&p=1433162#p1433162

Read those threads, and I think this will solve your problem, it did for me, and a few others.
