good VPN?
Hi friends,
I am looking for a nice VPN. i plan to use it mostly in public places, when you travel like, airport, coffee shops, and so on.
I have seen Bullguard but i;m not sure it's what i'm looking for. Prefer a classic and strong vpn. Any ideas? Thank you.

Re: good VPN?
I use Express VPN (Paid subscription) It's setup on my router so both wired and wifi connections are protected. It is also on my mobile devices for use when I'm travelling.

Re: good VPN?
Look into Private Internet Access. It's not the least expensive, but fast and very reliable. I've used it all over the world on Linux, Win 10 and my Android phone.

Hi Britcoin,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!
I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
There are many posts on this topic already in this forum if you search for them. You have to use a search engine because searching for "vpn" in the forum search does not work, too common a phrase and to short only 3 characters.
Example: Google Search
"site:forums.linuxmint.com" = search only within this website
"vpn 2018" = what to search for, search criteria
Startpage Web Search
https://www.startpage.com/do/asearch
+1 for the excellent low-cost "Private Internet Access (PIA)" vpn provider.
The excellent low-cost "ProtonVPN" located in neutral Switzerland.
A fair amount of people in this forum seem to like "NordVPN".

Re: good VPN?
Private Internet Access accepts payments from major retailer's gift cards, such as Walmart. You buy a gift card using cash for $50.00 and use the data from the Gift Card to pay for your VPN online. Means no financial connection between you and the VPN (such as a VISA card number, etc...).
A year's basic service with PIA is about $44.00 (not sure), but if you use the gift card as payment, you need a gift card for $50.00. It's a bit of a premium, but not much, it's a year's VPN service for $50.00, with no connection to you or your finances. They have multiple IP's to choose from, and from multiple countries, as well as the US.

Re: good VPN?
I use PIA (Private Internet Access) It has many servers across the world, they don't log anything so your privacy is maintained.
The server speeds are fast, so it doesn't slow down your connection like some VPN's do.
When you buy a subscription, you can use it on 5 devices all at the same time. The yearly subscription price is $39.95 USD
They have an application for Android and IOS.
PIA will run on Linux, Windows, and MacOS. I'm in my third year of having it and I'm very satisfied.

Re: good VPN?
" Good " is perhaps not the best word for describing VPN services , and choosing one .Britcoin wrote: ⤴Wed May 23, 2018 6:40 am Hi friends,

I'd be thinking :- less leaky , less untrustworthy , less crap , less likely to be lying about logging policy
It is a murky business , make no mistake ; "they" say they have a zero logging policy .... so what ?
What are you going to do ? .... walk up to their office , bang on the door and demand to inspect their server logs ?
Good luck with that plan !
There has already been a case of a previously " well-respected " VPN provider handing over "non-existent" logs
in response to a court order ..... but I won't name and shame here .
Having said all that ( sorry if it came across as cynical ) , PIA has an excellent reputation ( unblemished , so far as I know )
and when I'm pushed to make a recommendation , that is the one I suggest to people .
Of course we can take all of these trust issues out of the equation if we make our own VPN ,
starting with a virtual server .
It's not as hard as it sounds , and there is plenty of help out there on The Sprawl .
And it costs less than most VPN services !
Just my 2 chetrum worth ....

Re: good VPN?
For me ExpressVPN is the best VPN service of 2018, but the main issue is it is the most amazing but quite expensive if we compare with other service providers of same industry.Britcoin wrote: ⤴Wed May 23, 2018 6:40 am Hi friends,

Re: good VPN?
I have been using Private Internet Access for about six months. I have used it on many networks, computers, cell phones and operating systems including Linux. I'm not sure what would make it the "best", other than it always works.
Re: good VPN?
I've used PIA all over the world including some weird places. Always connects, always decent speed. I've used it on Linux, Win 10 and Android and find it stable and dependable.
Re: good VPN?
I've been using nordVPN for about a year with no issues at all. Not even a noticeable drop in speed!
Double VPNs, Tor connections, tons of options. Really glad I have it.
Mint now has an applet (thanks for that) that will monitor the connection - a kill switch - that works really well, called "VPN Look-out"
And there's also VPN Lifeguard, which is also good, but you need to install Gambas3, at least v. 3.9 to install it.

Re: good VPN?
thanks a lot for the options! so far it seems still difficult to choose one, mostly because of privacy concerns, On a funny (?) note, I am in Turkey now and can read almost any news site, download linux distros ha ha tens of GBs but simply can't access sites like purevpn.com or cyberghost...
