Nice! Thanks!seelengram wrote: ⤴Fri Jun 01, 2018 11:00 am The beta is now available on this mirror. Have fun testing ...

Edit: it looks like the MATE edition of 19 beta is not ready. It has a bottom panel but nothing is on it when you boot it live. Xfce 19 beta does work and installs. Haven't tried Cinnamon yet. Does anyone know if a page is set up for bug reports on the betas? I know it is still a bit early.
Edit2: Cinnamon 19 beta also boots fine live and installs.

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”
I'm finding it hard to resist downloading & installing these early Beta ISOs
Clem says they go live on Monday, June 4, but I may try this weekend. I have an MSI gaming laptop -- i7-7700, 32GB, 128SSD + 1TB with Nvidia GEforce and I'm anxious to replace Windows 10 that's currently installed (some concern about partitioning on this laptop, but we'll see) I can always reinstall.
I've already built a Windows 10 VM in VBox on the currently installed Windows 10, so I'm anxious to see if I can activate it under VirtualBox
This machine will hold several VMs running on top of Linux Mint Cinnamon 19 (currently, I do the same on 18.3), including Ubuntu servers.
Anyway, I'm excited! And, I'm so glad everyone put so much effort into this new release (all the new libraries, etc.) It's going to be great!

Installed 19 MATE ed without a problem. Did you verify the ISO after download?KBD47 wrote: ⤴Fri Jun 01, 2018 11:14 amNice! Thanks!seelengram wrote: ⤴Fri Jun 01, 2018 11:00 am The beta is now available on this mirror. Have fun testing ...

MATE looked right for you during the live boot? I will check it again.
Edit: this time MATE booted up flawlessly for me. Installing it right now. Not sure why I had a glitch the first time.
Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”
I thought about that, too. Another idea would be to stay with the same username but before doing the install, move all your config directories & files to another location (such as a subdir like ~/old_configs/). Then you'll be starting with all pristine configs, but you can still bring any of them back in later if you want to.BG405 wrote: ⤴Fri Jun 01, 2018 8:32 am What I'd do though, is rename the old /home/username and use the original name for the new one, otherwise it could get messy as I use the same username on all systems, which helps with file transfers between computers, using theforceuser=****
line in smb.conf.

When I give opinions, they are my own. Not necessarily those of any other Linux Mint developer or the Linux Mint project as a whole.

If installing Beta of version 19 - is it nessesary to reinstall after final is available or is the beta good enough to update ?seelengram wrote: ⤴Fri Jun 01, 2018 11:00 am The beta is now available on this mirror. Have fun testing ...

Installed - runs as expected - with no difficulties. Cute new icons. No means found to easily change size of scroll bars.
I will give it a good run today, only using the GUI, and see what happens.

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”
I've been testing in VM.. all good so far.
Has anyone installed with separate /root /swap /home partitions yet? I read on the blog people were having problems. Is /home encrypt-able?

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”
How big is the SSD? I have a 128GB SSD, and I'm going to leave the UEFI & recovery partition (for now) That should give me 50GB /root and about 65GB /home, as I'm keeping my /Data partition as /Data (currently, NTFS) with /swap on the end of that larger partition. It should work well.
I've already placed my VMs on /Data, so pointing VirtualBox there should work fine. It's stuff I want to "save" (and copy elsewhere if need be)
40GB /root & 75GB /home might work better -- currently, I'm only using 19GB /root & 32GB /home on 18.3

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”
Installed Wine 1.6 from the repository. No go - no recognition when attempting to use it.
Without Wine, I am without a paddle. Pulling the drive and putting the 18.3 drive back in. Try again with any updates in few days.
Again - all testing and use I am giving 19 is via the GUI - no terminal stuff. I personally feel that most PC users expect to do it all on the GUI. Else they will be lost back to Windows.

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”
That sounds a bit high, mine's about 16GB after more than 2 years' use. May be normal for Mint 19 though. How much stuff is accumulating in /var/cache/apt/archives ? Mine needs cleaning up again. Got rid of about 4 or 5 GB last clearout.

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”
I'm sorry if that was confusing! My current setup is1 with Mint 18.3, but I suspect the 19GB is the result of updating from 18.0 thru 18.1, 18.2 to 18.3
I have "cleaned out" some of the cruft by removing unused kernels, but I'm currently "pushing" 19G out of 25GB for the partition.
I hadn't thought of /var/cache, so I'll look at that. Once I move to the "new" MSI, I will wipe this drive and install Mint 19
