Get scanner of Brother DCP-7060D to work on Linux Mint 18.3 for Newbie [SOLVED]

Post by F3Spirit » Mon May 28, 2018 9:07 am

Hi,
I read the other threads but didn't understand much of the sorcery been performed (because I am a newbie).

My situation:
Have a Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3 OS with the 4.13.0-43 Kernel and a Brother DCP - 7060D Printer which is able to print but the scanner does not work via the plug n play method I used.
In Simple Scan 3.20.0 I get the "No Scanner Detected" Banner and the Scan Source Option in its Preferences are greyed out.

My knowledge about Linux is so small at this moment that I don't understand which of the tip’s from other treads are usefully and which don't.
Normally this is the point where I feeble minded copy and past all of the commands I find in the terminal till my system breaks.
BUT NOT NOW! - I want to try to understand for once how much I can and learn a bit better to operate Linux.

So if there is someone who can help a newbie out, how to fix a driver problem and explain a bit how we try to do this I would be grateful

Hi F3Spirit and welcome to the forum.

I think the easiest way to get your Brother scanner working is to follow Pjotr's how to, it worked for me!

Hi, this didn't work for me. Is there something else I can do? Maybe provide more information somehow so someone can narrow down the problem?

I know it is a newbie question but I don't really know how to find out what to do next on Linux in such situations.

Did you apply the workaround for 64-bit libs, as described in that how-to (step 10 to 14)?

Yes,
what I found interesting was that nothing was shown after every code snippet every time I pressed enter.
It looked like in my screenshot.

That's perfectly normal for those commands unless there's an error AFAIK. This is Linux, which unlike Windows assumes you really know what you're doing if you have an administrative level password.

Is the assumption of me correct that my Printer is not able to run under Linux then?
Or can someone help me to learn to proceed in a situation like this in a proper way to solve this?

Brother does a great job of supporting Linux.

Start here for your printer:

I feel a bit silly, I have to admit.
Because you gave me the link to the Brother support site where I downloaded the printer driver before, I went back and read everything more carefully again.

And I found the Scanner Drivers on the bottom of the side for the first time. From Windows, I was used to install one package and I didn't even thought about the possibility that there are different packages for the printer and the scanner.
Sorry to waste everybody's time, I think I learned this the hard way.

Have a good evening guys, and thank you for pointing me to the problem

It's never a waste of time to help. And believe me, most of us have done similar things like not noticing something on a web page.

use the installer tool for Brother DCP-7060D and any else

Post by pdc_2 » Sat Jun 02, 2018 2:22 pm

I feel that using the INSTALLER TOOL that Brother use would be the best option for folks; it is generic but from the DCP-7060D website, http://support.brother.com/g/b/download ... &type3=625

it comes down as linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1.gz and if SAVED to the Downloads folder, then the commands are

Code: Select all

cd Downloads

Code: Select all

gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1.gz

Code: Select all

sudo bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1 DCP-7060D
to specify that device but if one just uses

Code: Select all

sudo bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1
the script looks to see what is there; and suggests what it sees ..

I agree it is not intuitive; but if folks ask; the advantage of the installer tool is it covers both printer and scanner; and I believe it covers all the "tweaks" needed for the scanner section; (the bits Brother advise in the FAQ for scanners http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... edirect=on where there are sections on Ubuntu and therefore Mint ..)
