Dual Monitors: 2nd monitor not detected

Post by rpash »

I have been using Mint on my laptop for a few months now and decided to install it on a separate hard drive on my desktop partly because I have multiple monitors there. Upon installing Mint 18.1 and the relevant Nvidia drivers from the driver manager, it seems only one monitor works. The second monitor will show the Linux Mint logo during startup, but eventually foes black. After my main monitor starts displaying the desktop, 5 green dots appear in the center of the second screen as if it is loading. Visiting the Display settings only shows one monitor (both monitors are the same Lenovo 23" monitors at 1920x1080 resolution). In addition to my Nvidia card, I an integrated Intel card which is used to render the second monitor in my Windows setup. Both cards are detected by Mint, but only one monitor is. Here is relevant info from inxi and xrandr:

It seems like I'm missing something. The solution others have described on similar topics on this forum and other forums don't seem to work. I have tried installing 2 versions of Nvidia drivers as recommended on other posts: one version caused X server to flip out and throw error messages at me while the other just stopped both displays from displaying anything. It seems like the only Nvidia drivers that work are the ones provided in the driver manager. I have also tried using Mint 17.2 and 17.3 which have the same issue, though the green dots on the screen seem to be new to 18.1. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Dual Monitors: 2nd monitor not detected

Post by roblm »

1. What is the model number of the Lenovo monitor?

2. Post the Xorg.0.log file. Open the System Log in the Menu to view it. Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select “Code” in the menu. Press Ctrl+V to paste the lines between the two code words. If you have problems posting that long file, then upload it to github.com by using this command:

Code: Select all

pastebin /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

Re: Dual Monitors: 2nd monitor not detected

Post by roblm »

You're connecting one monitor to the Nvidia card and one to the Intel GPU. This setup won't work using Mint Cinnamon, unless the nouveau driver is used. It may work using MATE or Xfce. I was recently involved in a related topic in this same forum about connecting multiple monitors to two different Nvidia cards using Mint 18.1 Xfce and it worked: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=243882

A custom xorg.conf file would need to be created, with Xorg's Xinerama feature enabled. You also may need to set the Integrated graphics (Intel) as the Primary Graphics Device in the BIOS.

The easiest solution is connecting both monitors to the Nvidia card but an adapter for one of the monitors may be needed.

I don't understand what that means. The nouveau driver is for Nvidia graphics. You have Intel and AMD graphics.

Would you post the info I previously requested. Open the Terminal and type inxi -SMCGx. Copy the lines and then open the Mint Forum reply window. Select </> at the top. Press the Ctrl+V buttons to paste the copied lines into a code display window.

Also, are you trying to connect one or more monitors to both the AMD and Intel GPUs?

I have just one monitor on each GPU and everything seems ok but I only have the mint logo on the second monitor (the Intel one).
If I try some settings I can get the second monitor works but not on boot.
And when it works, it's with the same resolution that the first one who has bigger resolution.

I don't think you can change what GPU and what monitor that is connected to it will display any info during startup. That's determined by the BIOS.

Are both monitors in mirror mode when you get to the desktop? If they are, and removing the mark in the checkbox next to the Mirror displays option in System Settings > Display does not change that, then use this command to remove the monitors.xml file:

Code: Select all

rm ~/.config/monitors.xml
A new one will be created when you click the Apply button in Display.

Now I think I understand your problem. Why don’t you disable the Intel GPU in the BIOS and connect both monitors to the AMD Graphics card. You may need to use an adapter.

ouck wrote: Mon Jun 04, 2018 9:24 amI try to install amdgpu-pro without success but now inxi -Gx give me:
The only difference between the two inxi -Gx outputs is the FAILED: intel words.

Did you use this command to update the X.Org X Server from version 1.18 to 1.19?
sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-hwe-16.04

EDITED: that command should be sudo apt install xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04

That command removes all the open-source graphics drivers, which includes xserver-xorg-video-intel and xserver-xorg-video-radeon.

After the failed amdgpu-pro driver installation, the modesetting driver will be loaded after a reboot. The Xorg.0.log file will show this as modeset(0). To restore the radeon driver, use this command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-radeon-hwe-16.04

How did you try installing the amdgpu-pro driver?
What version of that driver did you try installing?
What kernel is installed on your PC?

Thank's a lot for helping

Driver from AMD website: amdgpu-pro-18.10-572953
Kernel: 4.13.0-43-generic

I didn't use the command for update X Server to 1.19

To install amdgpu-pro I use this topic viewtopic.php?f=59&t=248059
a little bit outdated. Mainly I've change ubuntu by linuxmint in the install script.

I can't install radeon-hwe-16.04 becaus of 2 missing dependances :
xorg-video-abi-23
xserver-xorg-core-hwe-16.04
and an error about "keep in state" packet mod

That was an error. I obviously didn’t look at the inxi -Gx outputs closely. If you were first using the radeon driver and then updated the X.Org X Server and tried installing the amdgpu-pro driver and then wanted to revert back to the radeon driver, then this command would be used:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-radeon-hwe-16.04
However, you are using the amdgpu driver, so if you did the other steps and wanted to revert back to the amdgpu driver, then this command would be used:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu-hwe-16.04

ouck wrote: Thu Jun 07, 2018 11:19 am To install amdgpu-pro I use this topic viewtopic.php?f=59&t=248059
The author of that topic has not updated the list of AMD video cards that are supported by the amdgpu-pro driver. I just recently got a cheap Radeon R7 240 video card which initially was not supported but now is.

Some of the other users mentioned that they were able to install the amdgpu-pro 17.50 driver using kernel 4.13.

Just two days ago, I noticed that the amdgpu-pro 18.10 driver was available. After several attempts, I was able to install it using the 4.13.0-43 kernel but not the 4.15 kernel.

If you want to try installing the amdgpu-pro driver again, then use these steps:

1. First use this command to remove any possible files left from the first unsuccessful installation:

Code: Select all

amdgpu-pro-uninstall
That command can be used from any directory.

2. If you have the 4.15 kernel installed, then it needs to be removed and then reboot.
3. Install the 4.13.0-43 kernel if it’s not already installed and reboot.
3. Use this command to update the X.Org X Server from version 1.18 to 1.19 and reboot:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-hwe-16.04
EDITED: that command should be sudo apt install xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04

4. Go to the amdgpu-pro-18.10-572953 folder. You already changed the word ubuntu to linuxmint in line 88 of the amdgpu-pro-install file. Right click in the empty space and select Open in Terminal.

5. Use this command to start the installation, which is what AMD says to use for your video card:

Code: Select all

./amdgpu-pro-install -y --opencl=legacy
6. After the installation, use this command to check if the amdgpu kernel modules were built.

Code: Select all

ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/updates
You should see an output similar to this:

Code: Select all

amdchash.ko amdgpu.ko amdkcl.ko amdkfd.ko amd-sched.ko amdttm.ko
If the installation fails, then use this command to remove any files installed and then reboot:

Code: Select all

amdgpu-pro-uninstall
Try another installation but use this command, removing the -y option:

Code: Select all

./amdgpu-pro-install --opencl=legacy
That was the only way the 18.10 driver would install for me. You should expand the Terminal window to full screen. Without the -y option, the installation will stop at one point and you will see this line: Do you want to continue? [Y/n]. Type Y and press ENTER.

Another mistake. The command sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-hwe-16.04 should be
sudo apt install xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04

That command also installs the missing dependencies for those other two packages, but you don’t need to be concerned about them unless you install the amdgpu-pro driver or the driver installation fails, and then want to go back to the amdgpu driver, which you are now using. Then you would use the command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu-hwe-16.04
The other command is for users who have older video cards, like my Radeon R7 240.

Thank's a lot, it seems to work ! :D

inxi -G

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card-1: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
           Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Device 67df
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.5 driver: amdgpu Resolution: 3840x1200
GLX Renderer: Radeon RX 480 Graphics GLX Version: 4.5.13519 - CPC 18.10.4.13
And the second monitor works !

I have two more questions:

My second monitor is only 1920x1080 but actualy a full screen app goes out of screen like a 1200p. The correct resolution is setted but like inxi says: 3840x1200. What can I do ?

And accessoryly: what is the best method to set a custom resolution ? I have create a startup script for my main monitor to set it to 1920x1200 because it was not detected by default.
But with this method the mint logo on start is only 800x600 like the login screen. Any better method ?

1. Use this command and post the output: xrandr --verbose

2. Are you now connecting both monitors to the Radeon card or still connecting one to the Intel GPU?

3. What is the startup script you’re using and did you add it to Startup Applications?
