HPLIP HP OfficeJet Pro 8630[SOLVED]

Post by vliscony »

Just ran into a problem I never faced before...

HPLIP is running.
The printer is running, and diagnostics are OK.

Still I cannot print ... e.g. in adobe it says: "HP_Officejet_Pro_8630 is not ready", etc.

I've head hiccups occasionally and was always able to fix with powering down the printer and/or the computer, but today none of it works.

How is the printer connected: USB, Ethernet, or WiFI? If it's Ethernet or WiFi, can you print a status page from the Printer's Console to determine network connection info?

Network status ready....

I was able to print sending an email to the printer's email address.

I am running this:

rogier@123456 ~ $ dpkg -l hplip
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Architecture Description
+++-==============-============-============-=================================
ii hplip 3.16.3+repac amd64 HP Linux Printing and Imaging Sys
rogier@123456 ~ $

Also, I tried to download HPLIP ( v 3.18.5) again, just in case, but what I get is... there was a problem opening the file... that happened twice now....

tried to run it from the command window, since it appears to be there, but no go:
rogier@123456 ~ $ sh hplip-3.18.5.run
sh: 0: Can't open hplip-3.18.5.
rogier@123456 ~ $

Any chance you're dealing with a Router or Network problem (since it's a network attached printer)? If you're using a Home Router, try reboot of the Router.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8630

Post by pdc_2 »

so HP say you need hplip 3.14 and Mint 18.3 comes with hplip 3.16; so 3.16 is fine; Karlchen on the forum has reported issues where one installs a newer version of hplip; over an existing version; just with using the scanner I think; some of the MFP devices need a plug-in but HP say your device does not, so that seems fine. I would not go racing ahead to install 3.18 ..

HP would suggest you try a couple of commands;

Code: Select all

hp-check
so see what the diagnostics on that tell you: paste it back here inside the code signs: the 5th icon from the left on the top line ...

......... and if you deleted the existing icon for the HP from the PRINTERS folder; (as you say it doesn't work): you could then run

Code: Select all

hp-setup
and let hplip set things up

(on Mint the default is packages you download end up in the Downloads folder; so you need to "get inside" that folder, to successfully run a command: so one would do

Code: Select all

cd Downloads
and then run a command I would have thought ..)

If you have a look at the folders above where you have posted this message, there is a PRINTERS sub-folder: I might ask the forum moderators to move this message there: it is easier to keep the printer threads together; so you may find your thread up there in a while)

en passant, what does

Code: Select all

lpinfo -v
give if you type that in a terminal please?

As to the earlier suggestion of a router reset... I tried it (again), the point being, that I had recently reset the router exactly because the printer had apparently dropped the wifi connection, and after resetting (now for a second time) the status is still that I can print from my phone, but not from my computer. On the computer the printer keeps reporting that it "is not ready." I can print all I want, but apparently it goes in the queue, but never makes it to the printer.

In short, I continue to be totally mystified.

Can I suggest you do

hp-check

from a terminal; look for errors; if all is well; delete the existing icon for the 8630 from the PRINTERS folder;

then do

hp-setup (please note: there is no space on either side of the hyphen ......)

with luck, the last command will set up a working icon for you

yeah, I had been trying that...

hp-check and hp-setup will not work

I ended up with lpq to determine that the printer was not working, and then doing a cupsenable and that got it working, but that was yesterday...

Today it will not work again... in spite of the fact that it now clearly says that it is ready

123456 ~ # lpq
HP_Officejet_Pro_8630 is ready
Rank Owner Job File(s) Total Size
1st unknown 658 unknown 665600 byte

nevertheless, the printer will not work. only way to print is to email it to the printer.

I am flabbergasted

here's what happens, verbatim:

rogier@123456 ~ $ su -

123456 ~ # hp-check
The program 'hp-check' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
apt install hplip
123456 ~ # hp-setup
The program 'hp-setup' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
apt install hplip
123456 ~ # apt install hplip
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
hplip is already the newest version (3.16.3+repack0-1).
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
libgsm1:i386 libpcap0.8:i386 wine-devel-amd64 wine-devel-i386:i386
Use 'apt autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 37 not upgraded.
123456 ~ #

and also:

123456 ~ # lpq
HP_Officejet_Pro_8630 is ready
no entries
123456 ~ #

and while we're at it:

123456 ~ # lpinfo -v
network http
network lpd
file cups-pdf:/
network socket
network beh
network ipp14
network ipp
network https
network smb
serial serial:/dev/ttyS0?baud=115200

123456 ~ #

additional juicy detail: in the Office print window it will say "rendering complete" after I try to print something, but it never actually prints.

still, whatever I try to print is not coming out, seems to be getting stuck in the queue...

What remains is that the only way to print at this moment is to email a doc to the printer.

goodness; you took it upon yourself to add the
su
before running the two commands; the two commands have always been run by anyone else in the terminal; by opening the terminal and doing hp-check and then doing hp-setup

(As Mint is derived from Ubuntu; it advises using sudo so we have always stuck with that advice; we used to use su only with rpm distros a while back)

can you type

Code: Select all

dpkg -l hplip
and you should get a positive that it is installed;

We have never established which version of Mint you are running; we have 18.3 and whilst our HP prints well, the hp-check checks our version of hlplip; 3.16.3 against the newer software of our 18.3; so it is unhappy; so best not run that ....

so I would suggest you next do

Code: Select all

hp-setup
and see if it can give you a working icon; (I would suggest deleting the existing icon as you say it does not work; meaning go to the Printers folder and delete the existing icon from there):

Hi visclony; I hope you have spotted your thread has been promoted to the printers sub-forum;
hp-setup
The program 'hp-setup' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt install hplip
..... then
And whenever I attempt to install hplip it tells me again it's already installed.
Goodness; what happens with

Code: Select all

usr/bin/hp-setup
as is ........ ie no su or sudo .............
