Re: black sceen
I panicked, after thinking I tried 'fsck /dev/sda2' [which I should have realised in the first place]clicked yes to everything and re-booted.
Don't know if it's fixed yet but it's re-booted into the desktop,
sorry about the headless chicken post, will mark it solved in a couple of days if all is fine

Re: black sceen
this is problem with auto updates and not rebooting the minute update finish.
Re: black sceen
Thanks it's done it again, how do I fix it?.
Or will I just have to fsck every time?

Re: black sceen
How old is the hard drive? It may be failing.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....
Re: black sceen
Don't know how old the drive is, Adata SSD Ultimate SU800 but the computer is only 6 months old,

Would rolling back with Timeshift help?
Re: black sceen
After starting the computer it opened into the desktop, tried to open waterfox and told that firefox was already running.
Restarted and it went into the black screen again.
after entering fsck /dev/sda2 it booted up fine, I've removed waterfox to see if it was causing the bad block on the file system.
Is this a problem SSD 38 bad sectors?

Re: black sceen
Uh...yeah. I'd be more worried about that on an SSD than an HDD, but if it's marked as bad, then should be OK for awhile. However the way HDD and SSD wear out, with an SSD it could indicate other areas have exceeded the write/erase lifetime. How old is the SSD and what sort of use in that time?Is this a problem SSD 38 bad sectors?

Re: black sceen
open up "gnome-disks" what is in qoutes can be typed in terminal to open it.
hit control s to open smart data and self tests. Check if it warns if the drive is failing. You can also run a self test, but only run a short one. I think you SSD may be failing If you have another drive I would backup your home folder before you do anything else.

Ran a short test, at the start temp 34, during went up to 45, at the end temp was 37. after a few minutes temp back down to 34 with 68 bad sectors.
Re: black sceen
If that many errors appeared so quickly, that drive is likely on it's way to the scrap pile SOON.
IMMEDIATELY back up anything important and shop for a new drive is what I would suggest!

Removed the drive and sent it back for CCL to look at.IMMEDIATELY back up anything important and shop for a new drive is what I would suggest!
I'm not impressed with an SSD drive that last five month.
Thanks for all of your help I'll mark this closed..
