[SOLVED] Sound Issue - Freshly Installed LM Xfce

Post by dunome » Sat Jun 23, 2018 2:41 pm

Hello !

I just recycled my parents' desktop PC because it was dead with Windows. So I installed LM18.3 Xfce 32-bits, but I noticed that the sound is not working. It does work with headphones though, but not with speakers.

I tried purging alsa / pulseaudio and reinstalling it, then "alsa force-reload", but it didn't work.

Can you help please.

Hi dunome. It could be as simple as speakers are muted. If you run alsamixer (in the terminal, type alsamixer), press F6 to select your sound card (possibly Azalia in the name), then use the arrow keys to move to Speakers. If you see MM at the bottom of the bar graph, just press m to unmute them.

Let us know if this helps.

Some sound is definitely a good sign, though/

Yes, use alsamixer, also install and run "pavucontrol" (for pulseaudio), check both for muting and such.

FWIW, "qasmixer" is a nice replacement for alsamixer.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!

Thanks for your replies

@Flemur I ran pavucontrol and checked, nothing is muted :(

@MrEden I show you my alsamixer, can you tell me what you think about it? I guess "master" is my sound driver

Hi dunome. I think you might have another option when pressing F6 that might say HD-Audio Generic or something else. If you do, select that.

The results you showed are similar to HDMI settings and we're looking for the analog settings.

cat /proc/asound/cards

Code: Select all

 0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
HDA ATI SB at 0xfe8f4000 irq 16
When I press F6, I have 3 choices :

Code: Select all

- (default)
0 HDA ATI SB
  enter peripheral name
I tried default, and HDA ATI SB, but still doesn't working :S

It looks like I was wrong about the selections in alsamixer for your card.

What port is selected in the Output Devices tab of pavucontrol?

Also, are there other options to select on the Configuration tab?

cf : screen below

I don't get it, the PC acts as if there is the sound. As you can see from the screenshot, it has been taken while I was playing a youtube video.

It's like there is the sound, but without the sound.

Concerning the Configuration tab, no, there are no other options

AHA! Go back to alsamixer, use the right arrow to highlight Line, then press m and your sound will probably work.

Okay. Try changing Entree ligne (plugged in) to something else back in pavucontrol.

Maybe too simple of a suggestion, but when you click on the speaker icon on the panel, and output devices, do you have port set to speakers?

That's where's I was heading, but I didn't know what "speakers" would be in the users language.

No problem :) I just hope that works for them. I'm using Mint Xfce 18 right now and saw the post and just started to click around to get an idea what could be preventing audio. Luckily in 7 years using Mint I've never had a sound problem on the dozen or more computers I've used Mint on.

'Speakers' is 'Haut-Parleurs' in my language. On output devices, I have "Entrée ligne (plugged in)" (could mean Line Entry, or Line Out in english ?), and headphones (unplugged). I don't have 'Haut-Parleurs'.
But as you can see from the screenshot above, the sound acts like it's working but it's not :(

On the Configuration tab of pavucontrol, exactly what do you see? On mine, I have Built-in Audio then beside Profile: it shows Analog Stereo Duplex.

I can click on Analog Stereo Duplex and change it to Analog Stereo Output, Analog Stereo Input (unplugged), and Off.

You audio card is very different than mine, but there should be some other options than whatever is currently set I would think.

Same. Analog Stereo Duplex, Analog Stereo Output, Analog Stereo Input (unplugged), and Off
Yes this PC is more than 10 years old. So my audio card is out-of-date :?

I don't understand why there is no Speakers option. I'll try to find some other suggestions.

One thing I should have had you try is using alsamixer to unmute everything with MM at the bottom.

Also, let's see the output of pacmd list-sinks as well as pacmd list-cards please.

WOW! I just now noticed you installed the 32 bit version. I assume the computer is 64 bit from this line in your inxi results: Dual core AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+

I doubt it has any impact on your sound issue, but just wanted to point that out, as you will be much more limited in what software can be installed on the computer. And there is a small possibility installing the 64 bit version will "fix" the issue.

Are you sure '64' means '64 bits' ? I always thought my PC was 32 bits
