Will Mint 19 have support for Ryzen 2200G/2400G?

Post by whm1974 »

I'm just wondering if Mint 19 will have support OOTB for the Ryzen 2200G and 2400G APUs. How is support doing currently?

The Distro version is not as important as the Kernel version it sits on in regard to hardware support.

I'd search your question and add "4.15 Linux kernel". You can test that hardware right now with a live boot of the beta or Ubuntu 18.04... etc.

Well then I should have asked which kernel will be the default in Mint 19 instead. While I'm not using Mint now, the reason I'm asking is that folks do ask me about computers and Linux every so often. Mint is my go to distro for folks completely new to Linux as I don't think it is a good idea to spring a Rolling Release distro on newbies.

I'm just thinking that the new Ryzen APUs are a great value for budget systems, especially the 2200G running Linux.

Has anyone else given thought about building a Ryzen APU Box?

Code: Select all

System: Host: admin1-To-be-filled-by-O-E-M Kernel: 4.15.0-23-generic x86_64
           bits: 64 gcc: 7.3.0
           Desktop: Cinnamon 3.8.4 (Gtk 3.22.30-1ubuntu1)
           Distro: Linux Mint 19 Tara
I did a quick search and found a benchmark test using 4.15.02 for those Ryzen chips so I'm pretty sure you'll be good to go once 19 is released proper.

Golden rule in these cases tell the vender what you want the chip/hardware for before you buy it. The responsibility is then theirs to provide you the correct product and you have a case for argument.

I tend to stick with intel for Linux, less headaches.

Personally, i'd go with Mint 19 Beta (since besides newer kernel on default install, you'll also also be getting a newer xorg / mesa graphics stack, aka, way less fiddling around to get it working)...

I've read some articles on phoronix about 2400G and Linux and how the APU was "finally stable". This convinced me to buy a 2400G and a Asus A320M-A motherboard with the intent to run Linux on the system. Boy, what a mistake!! :( I've tried several distro's, Mint being one of them, and it's just impossible to get a stable Linux-based system with the APU.

In order to rule out any hardware issues like incompatible RAM, bad BIOS versions and so on, I've tried to run Win10 on the hardware. This works flawless, so it's a Linux issue and I would not recommend anyone to buy these APU's for a Linux build for the near future. It's a proper shame though, since these APU's are a fantastic value for the money.

I would have went with a B350 chipset motherboard as they are better supported. To be honest I wonder if waiting for B450 mainboards will be worthwhile.

I do not have a separate graphics card to test with. For now I have an expensive box on the shelf, should have gone with team blue instead.

I'm not trying to make you feel really stupid or anything, but did you do your research before your brought your motherboard? Due to you buying a A320 board it sounds like you didn't. I advise that you buy a supported B350 one and use that instead. And don't forgot to update the BIOS.

Again, it is not my intent to make you look like a fool as I have too brought stuff on impulse without doing due research.

I picked the board because it had M.2 NVMe support and 6 SATA-ports. Every other 320/350 board in the price range did not have M.2 NVMe support or they did only have 4 SATA ports. It did not cross my mind that the chipset could be a problems with Linux, that I figured out afterwards. The board may be replaced with a 450 some time later - if I decide to keep the parts at all. According to your thread on the Manjaro forums it seems like the support for Raven Ridge is slowly improving, so fingers crossed! :)

How much did you pay for your board? Two things never to cheap out on when building computers: the motherboard and the PSU. I'm not however saying that you should go out and buy the most expensive, but spend a bit more can help you avoid problems later.

Come to think of it, since I been building my computers I've always paid around ~$100 for my boards. I'm sure that you will be fine with ~$70 one as long as you avoid the low end chipsets.

You can look up the price for Asus PRIME A320M-A at your local retailer. I'm not building a gaming rig, I just wanted more processing power without having to invest in an overpriced graphics card.

I can understand that. The Ryzen 2200G and 2400G APUs will make for decent Linux machines once the issues are all sorted out.

I did mess with the 2400G. You need minimum kernal 4.15, but their is no native graphics support. (just check AMD site still none.) I should put up the video I made. I did at the time manage to get kernal 4.16 to work on mint. (seemed better then 4.15) Honestly from test and GPU benchmarks I ran. Your better spending a little more and getting a ryzen 5 serries with an Nvidia 1050 . Will run you about 150 more, but not only is the system far more stable fro gaming. the bench mark scores were double. See my notes from when I tested. This was done a couple months ago. I returned the CPU and got the above. So same MB etc . (See my old notes.)

I did recently build a computer using the Ryzen 2400G . You will need kernal 4.15 or 4.16 . other wise it will not fully work. Stay away from Asrock (learned this the hardway.) They have no way of adjusting the memory used by the video in the bios and it defaults to very low memory. I know MSI allows you to adjust the memory in the Bios. the MSI B350M gaming pro I can confirm working well with the Ryzen 2400G with any mother boards manufactured after January 2018. Other manufactures I would ask them. Some think its ok not to have the settings on the bios now and think youll make the changes through windows  .

Also keep in mind that AMD has no official drivers for linux for the graphics side of the chip. So you will have to use open source.

I was able to get a score on medium settings of Superposition Benchmark of 1870 (2400G). compaered to a GTX 1050 scored 4385. Both running on same hardware.

hope the helps =).

Yeah I have read on other forums that MSI seems to have the best support for Ryzen APUs while ASRock is rather poor.

Just adding to the discussion, I made this thread mentioning that Ryzen 5 2400G is working flawlessly on Linux Mint Cinnamon 19 under kernel 4.18.rc3!

Cheers!

I struggled running a 2200G some months ago too to find out, that the information how to run them smoothly is very scattered around the net. I find that would be AMDs job to maintain a decent howto, because users tend to apply a lot of workarounds and fixes, mostly more than they would really need.
From my perspective knowing the effort AMD puts into drivers for Linux, I just thought it would be easy running a good selling CPU - I was wrong.

What I remember worked was:
Disabling IOMMU in the bios
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash amdgpu.dc=1" into grub
Kernel 4.17 upwards using ukuu from mainline
padoka or oibaf PPA for latest Mesa

Was pretty stable then, even graphics.
