What happened when you installed libxp-dev as the solution provides?

Hi Bilol,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

Hi Bilol,

You are welcome from all of us that replied...

You installed a 32-bit version of Linux Mint Cinnamon when you should have installed a 64-bit version of Linux Mint because your computer's CPU is 64-bit. I recommend you install a 64-bit version now after you have backed up anything you want to keep from the current installation.
System: Host: bilol-HP Kernel: 4.10.0-38-generic i686 (32 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.6 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3)
Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
Machine: System: Hewlett-Packard (portable) product: Compaq Presario CQ58 Notebook PC v: 0893110000304010002620100
Mobo: Hewlett-Packard model: 1858 v: 65.28
Bios: Insyde v: F.37 date: 05/16/2013
CPU: Dual core Intel Core i5-3210M (-HT-MCP-) cache: 3072 KB
flags: (lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 9976
clock speeds: max: 2500 MHz 1: 1199 MHz 2: 1199 MHz 3: 1199 MHz
4: 1199 MHz
Afterward, for security and other reasons, you might also consider updating the Linux Kernel to a newer one through the Mint Update Manager. You will have to reinstall any software you added including "Oracle's Java 8 runtime" and then "Matlab".
