Tara Cinnamon CPU usage

Post by Gmack »

Hi there
I am an happy user of Linux Mint 18 on my old but still very functional Dell Studio 1707.
I wanted to upgrade to Tara, installation worked fine, but unfortunately CPU usage on boot goes immediately near to 100% and stays there, with no application launched (as a comparison, on Mint 18 is about 10%).
I launched inxi, here is the result.

Any hint out there ?

Thanks in advance

Re: Tara Cinnamon CPU usage

Possibly found something.
By turning off the Wifi hardware switch, CPU calms down to a balmy few percents.

According to the driver manager the driver in use for my Broadcom card is

bcmwl-kernel-source
version 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu4

that looks quite the same as the one used in Mint 18 and that works seamlessly

bcmwl-kernel-source
version 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu1῀1.2

As an additional note, just instructing the driver manager not to use that driver does not solve the problem. Only turning off the HW switch does.

So at the moment, no chance of using the wifi on LM19.

Any suggestion ?

For what it is worth, last night i ran a batch of updates, that included the latest(i suppose) kernel and rebooted. Now everything seems snappier and i have not yet experienced the 98% cpu usage and so the cooling fan is off. Very happy with how it is running now!

Found a better workaround..... I disabled bluetooth from BIOS.
Now it works fine CPU ticking at less than 10% when idle....
yet, no bluetooth.

Re: Tara Cinnamon CPU usage

Post by fosssurfer »

I had High CPU usage and this worked for me as listed below.

It appears that when you use W+L and Restart Cinnamon the 1 core at 92%+ constant high cpu usage disappears.

I fixed this or it got fixed like this...

1. W+L

2. click the littel box (Actions) on the bottom right

3. click Restart-Cinnamon

Note: at this point my system hung with no Cinnamon stayed like that for over 5 minutes so I hit the power button to shut down Off.

CPU usage now in the 10% or less range for 1-2 cores some at 0-1% the way it should be.

I switch back on problem solved! Go figure.

I solved by installing Elementary OS.

But I would prefer a solution from Linux Mint.

It is a Ubuntu Bug

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl stop systemd-udevd systemd-udevd-kernel.socket systemd-udevd-control.socket
helps with my laptop during install

permanent fix is deleting:

Code: Select all

ATTR{bInterfaceClass}=="03", ATTR{bInterfaceSubClass}=="01", ATTR{bInterfaceProtocol}=="02", \
  ATTRS{bDeviceClass}=="00", ATTRS{idVendor}=="413c", ATTRS{bmAttributes}=="e0", \

Hi Paradroid

Thanks for updating on this. I currently reverted to Mint 18 and I think will stick to that until a fix is officially released.
However, just for my understanding does the fix that you suggest disable bluetooth or have any adverse effect at all on the system ?
just curious....

Thanks,

I installed Mint 19 again today because it got messed up somehow.
And because I have upgraded my wificard i did not lose bluetooth functionality.

As for other negative sideffects looks good so far, but as mentioned I tested only one day so far.
