Sound in Mint 19 Cinnamon

Post by Ctulhu »

Hi all

I just installed Mint 19 Cinnamon on my laptop and my desktop. On the desktop, I have a sound problem: when I boot, I get the Cinnamon startup sound, but then no other sound works: no test sounds, nothing from the browser, etc.

In the sound settings app on the Output tab, it recognizes a device "Digital Output (S/PDIF) Built-in Audio), but only one output profile associated with it: Digital Stereo (IEC958 Output) and no test or system sounds are audible when trying.

I also installed pavucontrol, where under output devices the sound card that worked unter 18.3 is: there I have
- GF110 High Definition Audio Controller (but all profiles are shown as unplugged)
- Digital Stereo (IEC958 Output) (but all profiles but two are shown as unplugged)
Under playback, I can see that the sound is processed when Chrome is playing a Youtube video for instance, but again nothing to hear.

Any thoughts: why is the login sound working, but nothing after that? Thanks!

Hi Ctulhu. On the Configuration tab of pavucontrol, is there somewhere to select something like Analog Stereo Duplex? If so, set that and test.

Those are listed, yes, but they are listed as both "(unplugged) (unavailable)".

I know it sounds wrong, but go ahead and select it. Then in the Output tab, you might also have unplugged next to your output source (headphones/speakers)
I have seen a case where this works.

I've tried that now as well as some other combinations of settings, but to no avail - in fact, now I don't even get the startup sound anymore when I reboot :-D

I was hoping that would've been an easy fix. So much for that. Please post the output of inxi -Ax and pacmd list-sinks and pacmd list-cards.

Also, are you using speakers plugged in, headphones, sound through monitor, or what?

I had something similar, and mostly fixed it by adding below to /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=<your model>
You can get the list from here: http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-ker ... xt;hb=HEAD

In my case the sound works but for some reason the internal subwoofer is mixed up with right channel. So left is normal audio and right is sub, and sub is also sub (go figure). Which means music actually sounds fine but I can't change volume for some reason.

I'm on an iMac early 2014 (I think)

Okay. The default output looks correct now, it's just not showing what we want as available. First, let's try reloading the appropriate modules. In the terminal, enter each of these lines:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio

Code: Select all

sudo alsa force-reload
If this doesn't get your sound working, and this is a dual-boot with Windows, boot into Windows and make sure sound is functioning properly. Then do a full shutdown (not reboot.) Now boot into Mint and test the sound.

Good luck.

Hi prizrak. Thanks for helping out and welcome to the forum. I checked an older list earlier and it didn't have ALC887 (the OP's codec) in that list. Your link includes ALC88*, so this could help if the OP is using an Acer Aspire. We'll check that next.

I tried the three terminal lines but it didn't work and no, there's no parallel boot possibility with Windows (I only trust Win enough for a virtual box) ;-) The system in question is a Dell XPS 8300 desktop. For now I'll try to reinstall the OS again, maybe that'll help, but I appreciate all your efforts; will update this later when I see what happens after another clean install.

Good luck, Ctulhu! If you still have the issue after a fresh install, see if there's anything in your BIOS that might help.

Similar problem. After clean install everything was working. After few days - no sound after some aupdate. Timeshift does not help. This situation repeated two times. Sound comes from headphones, but not from speakers.
