Grub EFI amd 64 signed signed package fails on clean install mint 19

Post by mhbell » Mon Jul 09, 2018 9:57 pm

Grub EFI amd 64 signed signed package fails on clean install mint 19
Installation is OK up to boot loader install, but fails with 'grub-efi-amd64-signed package failed to install into /target/' error. Details: Mint 18.3 installs so does Debian 9.4 and several other Linux Distros, with no problems. Formatted ssd disk and tried to install using uefi and GPT partitioning. Partitioned the following way.
sda1 is EFI 500 mb fat 32 partition with efi and esp flags set
sda2 is / partition
sda3 is swap
sda4 is /home partition.
I have formatted a usb stick and and installed the mint 19 iso on it and a DVD tried both to install but get the same error. All other distros will install fine using the same partitioning. Guess I will go back to 18.3 if I can’t solve this problem. Any suggestions and advise is appreciated.

I'm having the same issue. Everything was working fine and have installed Mint 19 countless times. Doing a clean install on a blank disk failed today. This has happened before on Mint 18 where something Ubuntu does gets changed. The new version of grub-efi-amd64-signed that appeared from Ubuntu today could have something to do with it. Mint needs to consider changing the script not to go out to the Ubuntu repository for an updated GRUB and just use the one on the ISO and then update it later. Updating the version on the fly during the initial install seems to be failure prone.

Work around is to install without a network connection!

But then you have to manually install mint-meta-codecs manually.
Would appreciate if Mint Devs would do something to stop this from repeating in the future and causing users a lot a headaches and screwing around.

Harry I think you are probably right since I installed LM19 on a couple of other SSD's a couple of days ago without a problem on the same computer. I guess the Give away was the Signed package in the error message. Glad you caught it. Guess I will not download during the install and use apt-get update and then install the codecs manually. Thanks for your help. Will try a new install now. I downloaded a new iso and put it on a new usb stick. will see what happens.

Thank you so much for posting this!
I just wasted about 5~6 hours of my time trying to clean install linux mint 19; I literally tried every single solutions related to this error, with no luck.

Is it possible for us to get notified when this bug is resolved?
I guess I'll stick with Windows for a while until I can install LM19.... (since I deleted my root partition for fresh installation)

I just reinstalled Linux Mint 19 after unhooking my modem from the internet. I did like harryhoutx said and it worked. I then rehooked the modem to the internet and downloaded all updates. I then downloaded the restricted Apps and also the mint codecs from software manager. Got updates again and all is working fine. I am using it as I write this. if you need the codecs download the ones called multi media codecs in the software manager. that gets them all in one click. Hope this helps someone. Thanks again Harry.

Same issue here too with Mint 9 Cinnamon 64 bit. I downloaded a new iso and did checksum. I reflashed by UEFI mobo firmware and lots of other "fixes" with no results.

I'm having the same issue. I installed Mint with the same exact configuration a week ago and everything went fine. I guess the latest GRUB update in the repository is broken.

I'm so glad I saw this because I was hitting my head against the wall trying to install 19 today and having the same problem.

Will try again with it unplugged from the internet!

after unhooking my modem from the Internet I was able to install Mint 19 Cinnamon. Tonight when getting more updates I see there was one with a signed grub. I have to assume the problem is fixed. Hope that the ISO has been fixed or at least the signed part that is in the ISO has been fixed at Ubuntu.

Yeah, I was wondering about that myself. i did the install sans internet yesterday which worked and then today I saw the update for the signed version...held my breath and applied it. Which seemed to work.

I'm still tinkering with 19 on my laptop for a bit before I install as daily driver on my desktop - it would be nice to know when i do that install whether I can be internet connected or will have to unplug as I install again..

Just disconnect from the Internet. Install Mint19 then reconnect to the Internet, then Get the Updates. For the Codec's Install using the software manager.
When you get the updates you will get the Grub Signed one also. No big deal. It works Just a few extra steps.

Hello,

I was able to install LM 19 disconnecting my laptop from the internet. Thank you for the work-around!
Once I rebooted the machine I got a GRUB error message:
GNU GRUB version 2.02 - Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word TAB lists possible command completions...etc. etc
Any suggestion to fix this ssue?
Previously I had LM 17.3 running on this laptop and I had no issue.
UEFI secure boot is disabled.

Thank you for any suggestion, cheers!
Ron

Same 'grub-efi-amd64-signed package failed to install into /target/' error on Mint Cinamon 64 clean install today (Friday 13th July at 1am GMT).
I guess Ubuntu hasn't fixed it yet in their repository. It's late, I'll check tomorrow, if it fails again I'll try with off-line installation.

Edit Fr. July 13th
Installed Mint 19 Cinnamon 64 in off-line mode. Still very annoying bug to see upon clean installation.

Same here. 19 Installing to external USB3 (Toshiba) disk, via Pendrive Linux. Fails to install grub2. Frustrating as I decided to clean install over 18.3 rather than upgrade.

Tried a number of things - upgrade to the Pendrive linux first, and switching off the WiFi adapter. I don't really have access to the router. Still failing. Not sure where to go with this. Rather disappointing really. I guess I will stick to 17.3 until it is all a little cleaner.

This should be fixed with the new version 2 .iso files which have been released.
https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3620

"More recently, a grub update triggered an issue in one of our own packages. That issue could only be triggered by a new grub update and so it had gone undetected during QA and the BETA test. Although it was fixed in a matter of hours in the repositories, it still affects our installation ISO images and it breaks EFI installations when the live session is connected to the Internet. The release notes were updated to ask people to install offline. New 64-bit ISO images for Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce were produced with the fixed package and they passed QA yesterday. These new ISOs will replace the current images in the days to come."
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.

Thanks to this thread and yours posts I solved all installation problems.

With the first version of the ISO I was able to install mint on VM with no problems. However, when I tried to install it on the laptop I have got the problem with grub installation.
I solved that problem reading this thread and start the installation offline :)

After that I downloaded the last ISO version and reinstalled again, online and with no problems
