I have a Dell Dimension E521 from 2007 (or so), on which I was running Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon (32-bit). At the time, I had 2GB of RAM (2 weeks ago, I doubled it to 4GB). When I heard that Linux Mint 19 was on the way, I remembered that I’d read that Xfce worked as the best desktop environment for older hardware, so I decided to upgrade to Linux Mint 19 Xfce (64-bit (my Dell has an AMD Sempron 3400+ processor that runs at 1.8GHz; the Sempron 3400+ is 64-bit capable, so that’s why I didn’t go with the 32-bit Linux Mint 19 Xfce)).

The Dell has an NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE integrated graphics unit and is connected via a VGA cable to a 20” Acer X203H monitor (that also has a DVI input that I use to connect an HDMI cable from a Windows 10 laptop/tablet hybrid via an HDMI-to-DVI adapter).

When I was running 18.3, the screen resolution was at its highest level (1600x900). Since upgrading to 19, the maximum resolution shows as being 1280x1024 - there’s no option to choose 1600x900.

How can I get the 1600x900 resolution effective again? I’ve tried installing the NVIDIA drivers twice (followed by uninstalling them both times); did I err by installing the 64-bit Linux Mint 19 Xfce instead of the 32-bit version?

as opposed to an in place upgrade?

I appreciate your prompt reply and willingness to help a "newbie" like me; I've used Linux for less than a month now, so learning, needless to say, is still ongoing! Per your request, I've pasted the output from the Terminal command you instructed me to run. Let me also note that, when my RCA Cambio 10.1" laptop/tablet hybrid running Windows 10 Home is connected to the DVI port (through an HDMI-to-DVI adapter), the resolution is at my monitor's maximum capable resolution, which is in fact 1600x900. When I ran Windows 10 Home on this Dell PC (that is now running Linux Mint 19 Xfce 64-bit), I did have 1600x900 resolution in Windows 10, so I do know for certain that it's capable of displaying in that resolution.

Did you check the resolution when booted to the Mint .iso in the live desktop mode
prior to selecting install? Perhaps you could run that test again to see if the monitor's native resolution
is achievable there. That will address a couple more question marks.

Using Etcher, I installed the iso for Linux Mint 19 Xfce 64-bit onto a 16GB USB memory stick. I rebooted the PC from the USB memory stick. The number of screen resolutions available was, if memory serves, 10, of which one was the 1600x900 resolution I was seeking.

When I selected 1600x900, everything fit in the screen - no elongated windows with the close button not even on the screen/clock not even showing at the bottom right of the screen. Those issues were gone.

The hard-drive-based install list of resolutions currently has only 4 showing, with 1280x1024 being the best; even with that, though, the items I mentioned the preceding paragraph were still existent on the USB-Drive-based LiveCD; I selected 1280x960 and that was what I decided would be ideal for my very bad eyesight (and I mean VERY, as in, per 2 ophthalmologists, not even correctable with LASIK!); 1600x900 on a 20” monitor is very narrow and is not pleasing to my eyes’ focusing abilities, especially having gone through surgery last August to correct a severely-detached retina followed by a cataract removal from the same eye a few months later.

So now, here’s the ?:
How do I make the hard-drive-based installation show the same 10 (or so) screen resolutions as what the USB-based LiveCD showed?

1. You never answered all41’s question:

Compared to all other video cards available today, the integrated GeForce 6150 LE GPU is very weak in performance. It is given a score of 25 on a scale of 0 to 15000: https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/low_end_gpus.html

It is supported by the nvidia-304.134, 304.135, and 304.137 drivers in Mint 19, but those drivers don’t work correctly for all supposedly supported hardware, including mine on my older PCs.

2. Did you try installing the nvidia-304.137 driver in Driver Manager and then removed it? The inxi output you posted shows the vesa driver is being used but it should be the default nouveau driver.

3. Run a live session with the Mint 19 Xfce installation USB and use these commands in the Terminal and post the output, to get some additional info: inxi -Gx and xrandr --prop

Then use these commands in the actual installation: xrandr --prop and ls /etc/modprobe.d and ls /etc/X11

You are correct in saying I failed to answer all41’s question. I did do a fresh install of Linux Mint 19 64-bit. I apologize for the oversight.

I know the GeForce 6150 LE is not that good, but I’m not wanting to put any additional $ into this 2007 Dell PC; the upgrade to 4GB RAM was the last purchase for said PC.

I’m looking to use it for spreadsheets, email, word processing, and web browsing. I’m not looking to use it for any video editing nor watching any HD videos on it; I’ve got 3 Smart TVs in the house that I can use for HD video-watching.

I’ll try the commands you posted and post the results thereof.

In answer to these questions posed by roblm:

On 2., I’m not really sure, so should I execute that process before proceeding to 3.?

On 3., I can use RealVNC to connect to the desktop at home now, but the LiveCD via the bootable USB can be done after I’m home from work later today.

Does the order of the steps in 3. matter at all? If not, I’ll remotely connect and run the commands from the hard-drive-based installation.

Also, when using the LiveCD from the bootable USB memory stick, how can I save the terminal output into a file to post from once I reboot using the hard-drive-based installation? I have a Netgear USB ac Wi-Fi adapter that I don’t believe works in the LiveCD mode, so I wouldn’t be able to email it to myself. I don’t have Ethernet in my house and I lack a long enough cord to connect to my COX modem/gateway/router.

Use these commands instead: inxi -Gx > inxi.txt and xrandr --prop > xrandr.txt

The output will be sent to two files named inxi.txt and xrandr.txt in the mint directory. Plug in another USB. Right click on the files and select Send to > USB.

Log out and back in. Go to System Settings > Display to check if the 1600x900 resolution is being used. If not, then make the change.

If there is a problem getting back to the desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. Login and then type this command to remove the xorg.conf file and reboot: sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot

I did EXACTLY what you said; when I logged out and logged back in, the maximum resolution showed as 1024x768. This is going the wrong way! This is also getting to be VERY frustrating and I'm wondering now if I should've stuck with Windows 10 Home.

Originally, I had said I wanted 1600x900, but it was really compressed on the screen and didn't work well at all with my bad eyesight. Instead, I want the screen's resolution to be 1280x960.

But, I'll press on. Is there ANYTHING in Linux similar to Windows' Device Manager so that I can delete the graphics card and monitor and have it scan for them again?

First use this command to remove the xorg.conf file: sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Log out and back in and check that the 1280x1024 resolution is restored.

We will need to verify that the nouveau driver is loading. The inxi output from your second post does not show the nouveau driver loading, but it appears that the vesa driver was loading. I assumed that was due to the driver listed in the existing xorg.conf file, which you probably created. To speed up this topic, I didn’t have you verify that the nouveau driver was loading, after removing the contents of that file, but that needs to be done before proceeding.

Use these commands to check for the nouveau driver: inxi -Gx and head -n 200 /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The output from the second command will have 200 lines, so it should be added to a code display window. Copy the lines and in the Mint forum reply window, click the </> button. Press Ctrl+V to paste the copied lines into a code window.

The Xorg.0.log file output shows the xorg.conf file still exists. You were supposed to remove that file and then check if the 1280x1024 resolution was restored.

The inxi output now shows the fbdev driver is loading. You had to do one of two things to prevent the nouveau driver to not load.

1. You added a blacklist nouveau line to probably the blacklist.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d, when you tried installing the Nvidia driver twice. If you did that, then remove that line and then use this command to update the initial ramdisk:
sudo update-initramfs -u

2. You removed the nouveau driver package, using the command sudo apt remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau. If you did that, then reinstall it with this command: sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau. Then log out and back in and use the inxi -Gx and head -n 200 /var/log/Xorg.0.log commands again and post the output.

roblm,

1. I deleted the xorg.conf file. I rebooted. 1280x1024 is still not showing; the maximum resolution shows as 1024x768.

2. blacklist nouveau does NOT show in the blacklist.conf file.

3. Thinking there might be something wrong with the nouveau driver package, I reinstalled said package using the sudo install command you gave me to run, but the output said "...xserver-xorg-video-nouveau is already the newest version (1:1.0.15-2)."

4. I logged out and logged back in. The maximum resolution still showed as 1024x768.

5. I decided to remove the nouveau driver package to "start over". I logged out and logged back in; I hate to sound like a broken record, but the maximum resolution still showed as 1024x768.

6. I installed the nouveau driver package again, repeating the same step as in 3. above and everything went fine. I logged out and logged back in and the maximum resolution still showed as 1024x768.

7. I ran the Terminal command inxi -Gx. Here was its output:

At this point, the ONLY reason I haven't reinstalled Linux Mint 19 Xfce via a fresh install again is that I've invested a ton of time getting other programs set up and getting things like printers configured. I'm still very frustrated; I wish I hadn't have messed with the NVIDIA drivers now, but, as a <1 month Linux user, I didn't know about the nouveau open-source driver until the damage was done.

Once again, I'm just trying to get to the screen resolution of 1280x960.

You won’t get that until the nouveau or Nvidia driver is loading.

Something is not right, and I don’t remember seeing this same situation in other topics. The previous log file shows the nouveau driver loading and then unloading:

and the inxi output shows the fbdev driver is the final loaded driver:
drivers: fbdev (unloaded: modesetting,vesa) FAILED: nouveau
The head -n 200 /var/log/Xorg.0.log command only shows the first 200 lines of that log file. The present log file does not show the nouveau driver unloading, unless it is happening at the end of the file, which usually does not happen, and the inxi output now shows the fbdev and nouveau drivers loading, but the log file shows the fbdev driver is the final loaded driver:
drivers: fbdev,nouveau (unloaded: modesetting,vesa)
I can only make two other suggestions.

1. The 4.15.0-24-generic kernel your system is using has caused problems for many other Mint users, so select an older kernel at the Grub boot menu. When you get to the desktop, remove that newer kernel in Update Manager > View > Linux kernels and reboot. Post the output of inxi -Gx.

2. Try removing the fbdev driver package with this command: sudo apt remove xserver-xorg-video-fbdev
Log out and back in. Post the output of the inxi -Gx command.

If there is a problem getting back to the desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. Login and then type this command to install the fbdev driver: sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-fbdev

Since I'm not home to access the BIOS upon powering on the PC, I'll try 1. later when I am there.

As for 2., 1280x1024 IS BACK (!!!!!!!!!!), but here's the output of the Terminal command inxi -Gx:

I really don’t know if this is in any way connected to the above, but I had to add “noapic” (& more (I think)) in the Grub boot manager thing to boot into Linux - something re. ACPI & my 2007 Dell PC not supporting it.

I was home this afternoon, but not long enough to do the BIOS/Grub/Kernel thing. After I get home from church tonight, I’ll be able to try that...

...BUT if I have to revert to an earlier kernel, will I have to reconfigure any hardware I’ve installed? I’ve got 2 HP printers and a Netgear USB ac WiFi adapter, all of which took quite a while and would be something I’d prefer not to repeat - if possible.

I’ll update with the Terminal output later tonight. You’re going “above and beyond” to assist me with this frustrating process; I greatly appreciate it very, very much!

I saw that in the log file and I don’t think those kernel parameters have any effect on what you're trying to do:

Any time you switch to a different kernel, there is a chance something else may break, and graphics and wireless are at the top. To be safe, at the Grub boot menu, select and boot with an older kernel but don’t remove the newer kernel until you have thoroughly tested the older one.
