[SOLVED] NO SOUND : Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio (Graphics card appearing in audio device list?)

Post by epistularum »

I'm a new Linux Mint user, I've never used Linux before and I'm not tech literate.

I have done a fresh install of Linux Mint Cinnamon 64bit and checked the box to use proprietary drivers.
Opening alsamixer gives "This sound device does not have any controls."

When I open the sound panel I can see two devices: "Multichannel Output Atom/Celeron/Pentium Processor x5-E8000/J3xxx/N3xxx Series PCI Configuration Registers" and "Analog Output Atom/Celeron/Pentium Processor x5-E8000/J3xxx/N3xxx Series PCI Configuration Registers"Multichannel
None of them yield sound when using the "Test sound" feature.

When opening Pavucontrol and viewing a video it shows sounds is being played but I can't hear anything.

Playing an online video causes the video to be played without sound, with a speed around 20 times the normal speed and the only image displayed is the first frame of the video(if I pause de video I can change the stuck frame to the frame I pressed pause on). (tested on Youtube and Netflix)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi epistularum, and welcome to the forum.

The graphics card in the audio list is for HDMI and DP audio (sending sound to your TV for instance.) Unfortunately, your system isn't detecting your built in sound card (yet.) It is possible it needs to be enabled in your BIOS. Sometimes, a complete shutdown will restore everything on the next power up.

In case it's another issue, paste back the results of typing the following in the terminal: lspci as well as aplay -l and just in case dmesg | grep -i snd

Thank you for the warm welcome.

I have entered the BIOS and I can't see such settings.
I have already shutdown completely my laptop several times.

Hi epistularum.

It appears you may have found a laptop that still has issues with linux as far as sound is concerned. I have found a possible solution from this thread that points to this github page

WARNING: I have not tested it, and the author stated in the Mint thread it wasn't tested on Mint. From looking at the github page, it appears you just need to copy that first wget line in the readme into your terminal and the script does the rest.

WARNING: If you wish to try this, I would suggest you make sure you have everything freshly backed up first. I appears it's going to install the 4.17 kernel then patch it which might cause other issues on your laptop.

If I were in your shoes, I would try this, but after I've backed everything up first (and know how to restore those backups.)
Please let us know if you try this and how it works out for you.

Best of luck no matter what you decide.

I ran the piece of code stated in the github page and it worked instantly upon reboot without any issue whatsoever.

I am deeply appreciative of the help you have provided me, truly wonderful.
