Re: No sound on HDMI in mint 18.3

Post by MrEen »

Hi George LG, and welcome to the forum.

On the Configuration tab of pavucontrol, you've set something to HDMI I assume. Now go to the Output Devices tab and do the same. If there's still an issue, start a song or video and type pacmd list-sinks in the terminal and paste the results back here.

Good luck.

On the Configuration tab of pavucontrol, i've set "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output", on the "Output Devises" tab the only choise i have is "HDMI / DisplayPort" under that i have the volume bar and under that i have a bar that is moving left and right with the music. When i change the profile in the configuration tab i still have sound via the internal speakers, when i restart i have the same parameters but no sound. I forgot to mention that the "nvidia-340" and "intel microcode" and, trying to solve the problem, i installed the "oem-audio-hda-daily-lts-xenial-dkms"
Here is what you asked

Hi George LG. You've done a great job trying things out and letting us know the results. Thank you for that.

I hope this is going to be the fix that works. In the terminal, type gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and scroll to the bottom of the file to add this new line: options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5. Then save the file and reboot.

Let us know if this works or if anything has changed, thanks.

Unfortunately nothing has changed.
I noticed something strange i don't know if it is going to help but i will mention it.
In the configuration tab i have "analog stereo output" and i have sound via internal speakers
when i change to "Digital stereo (IEC958)Output" i have no sound via speakers, it stops, which i think is normal cause nothing is connected
when i change from "analog stereo output" to "HDMI" i still have sound via internal speakers until i reboot,
then i have no sound at all, until i change it to analog again.

Okay. First thing to check is reseating the HDMI cable (but I'm guessing your video is sent properly.) Next, make sure the TV has the volume up (not muted nor 0%.) I know those sound like stupid things to check, but we all make those kinds of mistakes from time to time.

Next, assuming the above made no change, is to try replacing options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5 with options snd-hda-intel model=ref from my previous post. Then reboot and test.

If none of that works let me know and I'll give you something else to try (I don't have the instructions handy ATM.)

Sorry for the late answer but i've being busy for a couple of days.
All the wiring have being checked among 3 other HDMI devices (it was the first thing i did) and the volume of-course.
The only thing i cannot check is the output of the laptop, i may have to install WIN 7 again to make sure that it is ok.
I made the changes you told me and i had no sound at all, not even from the analog output.

Alright, let's try one more change to alsa-base.conf. This time, change the line to options snd-hda-intel model=auto

That is the default so it really shouldn't help, but I've seen it help a few people on this forum. If it's still not working after that change and a reboot, try reloading the sound stuff with each of these one line at a time:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload
That hinky condition you mentioned (change to HDMI and still get sound from speakers until reboot) does sound strange. If the above doesn't get you working, I'll see if I can find anything about that condition.

I have done these steps with no luck before i posted this.
I followed the direction in this post : https://github.com/heikomat/linux/tree/ ... and_manual
but with no luck again.
I've saved the debug log but it is too big (232000 words) and i don't know how to send it to you because there is a limit of 60000 words

Ewww. That link is for a different sound device than what you have. You have 92HD71B7X and that fix is for cx2072x (the last x is a mask essentially.) The user that was fixed with that script had an ASUS E200HA that I warned prominently would be taking a risk. I wouldn't even know what to look for in the log that script produced I'm afraid.

I am not certain what it would take to restore everything back to default settings. I'd like to suggest reinstalling 18.3 at this time, or install Mint 19 (the newer kernel in 19 might fix the original issue you had with 18.3.)

If you go with 18.3 and sound doesn't work, I suggest starting with alsa-base.conf changes first, in the order I gave them to you. This assumes your aplay -l output remains unchanged.

If you choose to try 19 and sound is still messed up, you need to use xed admin:///etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf instead of the gksudo command.

Whatever you decide I wish you luck.

Oh, before changing anything, could I see the output of inxi -Fxz please.

[Solved] Re: No sound on HDMI in mint 18.3

Post by George LG »

The problem has been solved. I installed Linux Mint 19 xfce and everything is working perfect. At first i had sound from the internal speakers, with pavucontrol/configuration tab i changed the output device to HDMI, but still had sound from the speakers, i rebooted and the sound came out from the TV speakers.
MrEen thank you very much for your help and sorry cause i forgot to get the output of inxi -Fxz.
Thank you very very much.

Hey, that's great!

Don't worry about the inxi, it was just one more troubleshoot I had thought about, but now isn't required.

Glad you're fixed! :D

Hi all
I have been dicking around with this problem of no sound through HDMI for 6 weeks now. I dont know why it is even an issue, but nobody has the answer. I have found a temporary solution though. I have connected up my screen to my PC via VGA and a jack plug for sound. I say temporary because the permanent solution will be to buy a Windows package. This problem is driving me mad no more. Bye Bye Linux..... Bye bye.

Hello, sonnydaze.

Welcome to the Linux Mint forum. :) Even in case that you really signed up just to tell us "bye bye".
I do understand that the problem is annoying. I do understand that not being able to resolve it is frustrating.
Yet, you appended your post to George LG's thread, who experienced the problem on Mint 18.3 and who in the end solved it by replacing Mint 18.3 by Mint 19 xfce. He marked the thread solved on August 5th, 2020.

Maybe you would be able to solve your problem in the same way, by replacing your current Mint release, which you have not mentioned, by Mint 19.3 e.g. Without knowing anything about your hard- and software there is no way for us to offer any help.

So in case you should be willing to invest time in a last try, then, please, post your "system information". You will find the precise steps on how to do so here:
+ How to post your Linux Mint System Information (inxi report) (Mint 19.2+19.3)
or
+ How to post your System Information (inxi report) the manual way (any release)

Best regards,
Karl

Re: [SOLVED] No sound on HDMI in mint 18.3

Post by sonnydaze »

Thanks but no thanks, I have seen on various forums that this is a big problem that seems to be a linux thing, Many people who have duel op systems report that windows works ok. This should not be an issue. I should not need an army of willing helpers in the first place. I have been using Linux for about 8 years now and maybe this has made me forget why I sacked windows back then, but we will see. I have tried hard to solve this with my limited abilities, I have used numerous versions of Linux mint including 20, and thrown a fair bit of cash at it as well. I have had enough.
Thanks

Not when there's no question. You're correct there.

If you cool off and would like some help tackling this, the output of this command will point to your sound setup and might indicate why you're having trouble:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
It would be best to run that while you're attempting to use HDMI for sound.

The question HAS been asked in various places and the respondents solution has ended in outcomes varying from no change, or needing a reinstall of mint on a couple of occasions, to the more recent aggravated assault on my pc, resulting in a huge dent in the top. This is not to insult those people who all, I am sure, wanted to help. The problem is my inability to understand. I am a mechanical design engineer, and a pretty good one too. I say this to illustrate that I am not thick. But you Linux folks talk in a language that simply does not help a mortal to understand how this or that works. I have asked the question in perfect English, but the answer might as well have been written in machine code for all the use it has been to me, and this is compounded by the assumption that the simple stuff does not need to be explained. If you have never seen a spanner, the hexagon shaped nut would make no sense. Simplify!
Thank you for offering to help, but I am returning to the dark side (windows) for my sanity and for the continuing functionality of my desktop computer.

Not here you didn't. You only have 3 posts, so it didn't take too long to look for one. You've made many statements, but asked nothing.

Except for the best place to ask about this...Here!

I realize it's probably too late, but if/when you try Linux again and have questions, ask on the forum of the distro you're using. That's you best chance of getting helped quickly and properly.
