[SOLVED] No sound on HDMI in mint 18.3

Post by George LG » Sun Jul 29, 2018 3:16 pm

Hey all, I have a HP Pavillion dv5 with no display and decided to use as a media center connecting it with my TV via HDMI. I installed Linux Mint 18.3 but i have no sound via HDMI, i have sound via internal speakers only.I' ve tried to solve the problem by changing the profile with "pavucontrol" with no luck. I am providing info about my system.

Hi George LG, and welcome to the forum.

On the Configuration tab of pavucontrol, you've set something to HDMI I assume. Now go to the Output Devices tab and do the same. If there's still an issue, start a song or video and type pacmd list-sinks in the terminal and paste the results back here.

Good luck.

On the Configuration tab of pavucontrol, i've set "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output", on the "Output Devises" tab the only choise i have is "HDMI / DisplayPort" under that i have the volume bar and under that i have a bar that is moving left and right with the music. When i change the profile in the configuration tab i still have sound via the internal speakers, when i restart i have the same parameters but no sound. I forgot to mention that the "nvidia-340" and "intel microcode" and, trying to solve the problem, i installed the "oem-audio-hda-daily-lts-xenial-dkms"
Here is what you asked
This is with "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output"

Hi George LG. You've done a great job trying things out and letting us know the results. Thank you for that.

I hope this is going to be the fix that works. In the terminal, type gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and scroll to the bottom of the file to add this new line: options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5. Then save the file and reboot.

Let us know if this works or if anything has changed, thanks.

Unfortunately nothing has changed.
I noticed something strange i don't know if it is going to help but i will mention it.
In the configuration tab i have "analog stereo output" and i have sound via internal speakers
when i change to "Digital stereo (IEC958)Output" i have no sound via speakers, it stops, which i think is normal cause nothing is connected
when i change from "analog stereo output" to "HDMI" i still have sound via internal speakers until i reboot,
then i have no sound at all, until i change it to analog again.

Okay. First thing to check is reseating the HDMI cable (but I'm guessing your video is sent properly.) Next, make sure the TV has the volume up (not muted nor 0%.) I know those sound like stupid things to check, but we all make those kinds of mistakes from time to time.

Next, assuming the above made no change, is to try replacing options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5 with options snd-hda-intel model=ref from my previous post. Then reboot and test.

If none of that works let me know and I'll give you something else to try (I don't have the instructions handy ATM.)

Sorry for the late answer but i've being busy for a couple of days.
All the wiring have being checked among 3 other HDMI devices (it was the first thing i did) and the volume of-course.
The only thing i cannot check is the output of the laptop, i may have to install WIN 7 again to make sure that it is ok.
I made the changes you told me and i had no sound at all, not even from the analog output.

Alright, let's try one more change to alsa-base.conf. This time, change the line to options snd-hda-intel model=auto

That is the default so it really shouldn't help, but I've seen it help a few people on this forum. If it's still not working after that change and a reboot, try reloading the sound stuff with each of these one line at a time:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload
That hinky condition you mentioned (change to HDMI and still get sound from speakers until reboot) does sound strange. If the above doesn't get you working, I'll see if I can find anything about that condition.

I have done these steps with no luck before i posted this.
I followed the direction in this post : https://github.com/heikomat/linux/tree/ ... and_manual
but with no luck again.
I've saved the debug log but it is too big (232000 words) and i don't know how to send it to you because there is a limit of 60000 words

Ewww. That link is for a different sound device than what you have. You have 92HD71B7X and that fix is for cx2072x (the last x is a mask essentially.) The user that was fixed with that script had an ASUS E200HA that I warned prominently would be taking a risk. I wouldn't even know what to look for in the log that script produced I'm afraid.

I am not certain what it would take to restore everything back to default settings. I'd like to suggest reinstalling 18.3 at this time, or install Mint 19 (the newer kernel in 19 might fix the original issue you had with 18.3.)

If you go with 18.3 and sound doesn't work, I suggest starting with alsa-base.conf changes first, in the order I gave them to you. This assumes your aplay -l output remains unchanged.

If you choose to try 19 and sound is still messed up, you need to use xed admin:///etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf instead of the gksudo command.

Whatever you decide I wish you luck.

Oh, before changing anything, could I see the output of inxi -Fxz please.

The problem has been solved. I installed Linux Mint 19 xfce and everything is working perfect. At first i had sound from the internal speakers, with pavucontrol/configuration tab i changed the output device to HDMI, but still had sound from the speakers, i rebooted and the sound came out from the TV speakers.
MrEen thank you very much for your help and sorry cause i forgot to get the output of inxi -Fxz.
Thank you very very much.

Hey, that's great!

Don't worry about the inxi, it was just one more troubleshoot I had thought about, but now isn't required.

Glad you're fixed! :D
