Why So Many Bad Kernels - Compatibility problems between Nvidia driver & kernel
I'm running Cinnamon 18.3 with Kernel 4.13.0-45...then recently Kernel 4.15.0-30 came out...result...Black Screen of Death and today Kernel 4.15.0-32 gets the same result...Black Screen of Death.
So my question is...Why so many bad Kernels ? That's two in a row...not good guys...feel like I'm back in Windows I did expect better...maybe my expectations are too high. Newbies take note...learn how to Roll-Back a Kernel...otherwise you'll be looking at a Black Screen which seems to be the norm now.

Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.
Did you submit a bug report to Ubuntu regarding your problems with 4.15.0-30? No? Well, there's your answer why the next in the series has the same problem.
Sounds like a video driver issue, anyway.
No such issue on my hardare.

Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.
We didn't see you ask for help, you tried to paint a bad picture about the distro to new users, claiming that bad kernels are the norm. We both confirmed that there is no such norm.
If you want to ask for help instead, there's a red banner with the forum rules right above your thread with a link which explains how to get help.
Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.
Latest are running fine for me also, nvidia 390 graphics, no microcode, latest Mint.

This is the reason why LMDE is getting more attractive to me. The main edition Linux Mint stability depends on Ubuntu.
If you're looking for a greener Linux pasture, you won't find any that is greener than Linux Mint. ;)

With comments like yours it's no wonder people are reluctant to complain about problems...Newsflash...Mint isn't prefect either...I'm not the only person with Kernel problems of late either. Complaining about a consistent problem is not bashing the Distro...maybe in your eyes but not in mine.

Does Mint 18 work well with the 4.4 kernels? If so I would keep using them as there is nothing to be gained from a newer kernel series other than hardware support as the 4.4 kernels will receive the same security updates as 4.15bob466 wrote: ⤴Wed Aug 15, 2018 7:23 pmWith comments like yours it's no wonder people are reluctant to complain about problems...Newsflash...Mint isn't prefect either...I'm not the only person with Kernel problems of late either. By going straight to Debian, you only deal with Debian bugs. But with Ubuntu, you deal with Debian bugs + Ubuntu bugs.

Topic moved to chat about Linux Mint as the poster doesn't seem to want help
Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.
Then cut out the middle-man, if you get your kernels from https://www.kernel.org/ you don't have third-party bugs at all. Nor their fixes, of course.mediclaser wrote: ⤴Wed Aug 15, 2018 7:48 pm...just like Ubuntu.gm10 wrote: ⤴Wed Aug 15, 2018 6:49 pmLMDE stability depends on Debian....mediclaser wrote: ⤴Wed Aug 15, 2018 6:46 pm

I'm always a big fan of people taking comments out of context. Good job. But if it helps getting less threads like this then by all means. And as I already said in the second post of this thread, if you actually cared about solving a problem you'd submit a bug report upstream where it belongs. You can rant over here all you want (now that a mod moved it to the correct section) but it won't change a thing.bob466 wrote: ⤴Wed Aug 15, 2018 7:23 pm With comments like yours it's no wonder people are reluctant to complain about problems...Newsflash...Mint isn't prefect either...I'm not the only person with Kernel problems of late either. Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.
+1 - Mint 18 works great for me on several PCs and laptops with 4.4. I had some minor issues with 4.15 so I continued using 4.4 which runs flawless on my various diverse hardware. That's the beauty of Linux, so many options.Does Mint 18 work well with the 4.4 kernels? If so I would keep using them as there is nothing to be gained from a newer kernel series other than hardware support as the 4.4 kernels will receive the same security updates as 4.15
Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.
I'm running 4.13.0-45 and it works just fine so I'll be staying with it for now...in the past I've had a good one followed by a bad...then I might get two or three good then a bad resulting with a black screen. The strange thing is...when I installed Cinnamon 19 with the latest Kernel it was fine and because I didn't like 19 I did a clean install of Cinnamon 18.3...did all the updates including the latest Kernel I got the black screen again using the same Graphics Card.JeremyB wrote: ⤴Wed Aug 15, 2018 7:28 pmDoes Mint 18 work well with the 4.4 kernels? hi bob466...we never did see a... inxi -Fxz ...readout of your system to determine just what kind of hardware etc that you are expecting that kernel to work on...that in itself could be the problem...DAMIEN

I built it back in 2013 (All new parts) and was running Windows 7 until 2016 when I switched to Linux Mint which I love. I have three HDDs in the Tower but only my main Cinnamon 18.3 HDD is connected to the Motherboard...the others are a Test HDD and my Windows 7 HDD which I'm too lazy to wipe.

Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.
just a thought in the dark here...have you as of yet, run the driver manager for the nvidia update for the "390" version as of yet, and then try the newest kernel...my thinking is the graphics driver just might be the problem and not the kernel...just a thought here, and also could you copy and paste the following that i listing below...am interested in what microcode you are currently running ?...the code is there and its results should look something like this...im also running an i5 intel quad core on this machine right now...not saying it will work but the systems are similar...nothing ventured, nothing gained...lol...DAMIEN

There have been various reports of folks having issues with the 4.15 kernels on 18.3 with 18.3 nvidia drivers. Others have no issue with 4.15 kernels and 19 nvidia drivers on same or similar hardware. The 19 nvidia drivers were several versions ahead last time I looked.
So it's a driver issue. It looks like for the 304 / 340 driver it is affecting Ubuntu 16.04 users aswell -
