LM18.3 queries on boot fsck check [SOLVED]

Post by lazarus »

LM18.3 Cinnamon

Of late I've noticed grub forcing a fs check every boot. It's usually only a momentary, almost subliminal, flash of text underneath the LM loading logo.

I've no problems with this, quite happy for it to do so. Except...

1. Has LM18+ always done this? I can't say that I'd noticed it at all until this last week. So I'm wondering if I've simply been blind all this time, an update has disabled the fastboot option in grub or maybe my new boot drive is already failing. (Would the RAID to be mounted this early?)

2. Every so often, instead of a quick flash of text I can actually see the % counter whizzing thru 0 to 100%. It still only takes a second or so but it does suggest that there was something that needed checking, no matter how quickly it is checked. And that does concern me, as this system is almost always shut down correctly. ("Almost," purely because I have no control over the power supply and 'Acts of God.'.)

I cannot find any reference to a fsck being performed in the logfiles... but perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places. :?

No.
lazarus wrote:(Would the RAID to be mounted this early?)
Possibly.

Yes, it does.

Please post the output of this terminal command:

Code: Select all

dmesg
Enclose the results between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

Do the same for inxi -Fxz

Hmmm... dmesg generates output longer than the forum will accept. You prefer it trimmed or in multi-part?

In the meantime...

It should be ok if you paste it between code markers. If need be, split it up rather than trim it.

To start with, you should update your BIOS, reboot and see if the message reappears. If it does, I'll need the dmesg output.

Of course, I'm as capable of missing the blatantly obvious as anyone.... if not more so.

Nothing conspicuous in the first part. Do you know what drive is affected?

Also, please post the output of lsblk.

Ooer! Touché A hit, a palpable hit!

In my defence I had upgraded it back when still running Win but it broke the RAID functionality of the mobo so I reverted. In my head it was still upgraded... funny things heads.

As I'm no longer using the pseudo-HW RAID, I'll do just that now. If I can find something bootable to format as FAT32 for the InstaFlash. :?

Is your swap partition actually 48GB?

Yes. Yes it is. I've always preferred 2xRAM for size and in this case I have 3TB to play with so went liberal

in the near future /sda will be replaced by a 500GB SSD, so /swap will shrink and /sda5 and /sda6 will disappear into the aether. They're handy for now, though.

If you're wondering about the partitioned RAID, that was before I discovered Timeshift "wouln't do" RAID. One day I'll get around to recreating 'em as md0 only.

Ok, you can try unmounting the drives then running sudo fsck -f /dev/sdXN where X is the letter and N is the partition number to check. You can also try sudo fsck -f /dev/md0 and sudo fsck -f /dev/md1. These will reveal if there are any file system issues. Make sure you unmount the drive being checked first.. If it's happening to your / partition, doi it from a live USB or DVD.

What I think is happening is that your ageing machine can't keep up with the kernel messages :) so you see messages that you wouldn't normally see. I'm fairly certain that an fsck runs automatically on every boot, but it's only a check to make sure the journals are clean, it's not a full check. I think this is what you are seeing.

That wouldn't be surprising. So the boot fsck is default? I know it can be disabled with the fastboot option in grub, but I wasn't sure whether I'd enabled that or not.

I've already manually fsck'd all drives as a precaution; it was the first thing I did along with checking smartctl for low level issues.

But the BIOS... oh, yes. The BIOS. Good call. Maybe that'll patch some of the other warns & oddities I'm currently chasing down.

Thank you kindly for your time and patience, sirrah!

One more thing to check, run the Disks utility and select SMART Data & Self-Tests. I think that for the RAID arrays, you'll have to stop them completely before you can check the disks.

Sirrah? HURRUMPH! I'm 85, junior

Ok, based on your response, you probably don't have anything to worry about but I would still check the SMART values for the drives.

Cheers.

OK, BIOS fully updated... along with a nasty scare. It hung on boot until I flushed the CMOS, then went in to reconfigure most settings.

No real changes to the logfiles, all the pre-existing warns are still there, although I didn't spot the fsck msg this time around. Still, I suspect you're right about the cause of that and it'll be back soon enough.

I do have a concern about the RAID; BIOS re-detected drive order differently, hence mountlist for the RAID is screwy. Thank God for superblocks! I'll make a new thread for this, though. This one is [SOLVED] well enough for me.

Thank you again, Catweasel. I'm sooo glad you're only semi-retired from the 'help desk.' :D

My understanding is it is set to check in fstab
Controls the order in which fsck checks the device/partition for errors at boot time. The root device should be 1. Other partitions should be 2, or 0 to disable checking.

According to a book I have - "A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux" by Mark G. Sobell:

"Root (/) should have a 1 in this column. Filesystems that are mounted to a dirctory just below the root directory should have a 2. Filesystems that are mounted on another mounted filesystem (other than root) should have a 3. For example, if local is a separate filesystem from /usr and is mounted on /usr (as /usr/local), then local should have a 3. Filesystems and directory hierarchies that do not need to be checked (for example, remotely mounted directory hierarchies and CDs/DVDs) should have a 0."

No other place I've seen has the "3" option - I wonder if that really does anything different than "2".
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.
