Nvidia video tearing

Post by Moosetek13 » Fri Aug 31, 2018 9:43 pm

It seems to have been resolved with driver version 390.77.

I just got these installed and have not noticed the tearing problem.
Make sure you update through Update Manager after they are installed. There was something in there that made it work.

I'm using Mint 19.

Woops, spoke too soon.

It seems better, but the tearing is still there.

I'm using 396.54 (fairly new reinstall after purging Windows 10) and, so far, it's been great. Even the previous minor issues I had with VirtualBox seem to have been fixed.

I haven't been able to get 396 to install. Missing dependencies, and I do not know how to get them.
I'm pretty new with Linux problem solving.

I ran into this once after adding the PPA. I had to install the latest 390 drivers, then I could upgrade to the 396. Can you post the error(s) you're getting?

OK - how are you trying to install, via the CLI or the Driver Manager?

In a terminal:

sudo apt remove --purge *nvidia*

That will get rid of the nVidia driver completely. After rebooting, post the output of this terminal command:

inxi -Fxz

Enclose the results between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

It shows in the Driver Manager, but when I try to install it from there it just hangs part way through.
If I go to the terminal and do "sudo apt install nvidia-driver-396" it gives the previous output.

Sorry it took so long. After I removed the Nvidia drivers everything was back to the beginning and I had to figure out how to do the 'nomodeset' option in Grub once again.

Ok, do this in a terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt update
Then run Driver Manager and choose the recommended driver. Once we've got the driver running and loaded properly, we'll sort out the tearing.

Driver Manager just stalled, so I used the terminal to install driver 396.
However, I do not have the Nvidia control panel in the system tray even though Driver Manager now says I'm using the 396 drivers.
It also says 'no proprietary drivers are in use' at the bottom.

You should have stopped there and posted back here. Now we have to start all over again.

Post the output of dkms status.

Did you check that nVidia Settings was installed? If so, is it operational? If it's not operational, did you reboot? If you didn't reboot, do so, check nVidia Settings again then post back.
