Slow response and Incomplete Menu Names 17.3

Post by magno_grail »

Wiped previous versions of XP and Linux (Ubuntu 16.04.4, 17-04-32 bit, LM 17.1, and 18.1 would not install) now trying LM 17.3) on Athlon 2200. Login takes about 20 seconds between typing and showing up on the screen. Typing here works without delay. Menu bar on bottom of screen shows random characters of the task name. The menu in the lower left just shows "M " when hovering over it. Clicking on the Menu gives the box but only the "e" show from the task names. A few of the icons show up if I move the cursor around the box.
The other installations stalled at the About You, could not enter any characters. Plus, they took a minute or so after the menus appeared before the Continue box would activate.
The hard disk light does not appear to be unusually active. Any ideas on what the problem is? I wrote the .iso at 2x so there should not have been errors there.

Ancient Athlon may be too slow for modern operating systems.

Try Puppy Linux.

The speed of the processor does not affect displaying characters on the screen. I moved the hard disc to another machine (also Athlon) and it worked normally. Either incompatibility with the video card or failing. It worked with XP.
Now I have to decide whether to keep Mint or go back to Ubuntu. Any reason to chose one over the other?

The other hardware may be too weak for modern operating systems. What is the result for inxi -Fxzo command?

I put the video card in another machine and the same problem of dropping characters in the Menu. Firefox works (once I can find it in the Wheel of Fortune game). So it is a hardware problem, probably driver since the windows work properly.
By the by, that card is in this machine.
Just found another thread that says this card is not supported by 17. I will go back to my other card that works.

Mate desktop could work with that hardware. You can install Mate and select Mate desktop on the login screen and see how it works.

Code: Select all

apt install mate-desktop mate-utils mate-applets mate-system-monitor caja-open-terminal caja-gksu
