Installing Mint 19 on HP Pavilion - no wireless

Post by ummagumma »

Hi guys, I think I may have done something really stupid but...hopefully not.

I just received a second hand refurbished HP Pavilion G6 and decided to install Mint 19 straight onto it, overwriting Windows (never been booted into). Unfortunately, the wifi light on key F12 is always orange (apparently it's supposed to turn blue when connected). I have read somewhere that I should have booted into Windows first and got the wifi working before installed, this was after the fact. Please someone reassure me I haven't bricked the laptop!

I've used the inxi -Fxz command as referenced on a few other threads, seems to reveal no wireless card, only ethernet.

Any suggestions.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Do the same with the following four commands:

Code: Select all

rfkill list all

Code: Select all

iwconfig

Code: Select all

lsusb

Code: Select all

lspci

Try if it helps when you toggle the wifi switch by means of the Fn key combination for it, on your keyboard.

If that doesn't help, try this:

Thanks for the suggestions.

The wireless light does not change regardless of whether Fn is pressed or not, nor whether it's changed in the BIOS. I'll try the other suggestions when I get a chance and report back.

Thanks again.

Sadly, tried the various things on that website you linked to...no dice.

Slowly reaching the end of my tether. Is it feasible to purchase one of those USB wireless dongle things, I'm more than happy to sacrifice a USB port and they don't seem to be expensive, is that a potential solution or are they not going work because of the internal card issues?

That might actually be a good idea, by way of emergency measure....

This dongle should work out of the box (no need to install any drivers):

Ok, bought a USB wireless adapter, less than 10 quid.

Works a treat, actually gets me the fastest standard available from the router which the built-in card wouldn't have been able to do.

So...not fixed, probably never will be but alls well that ends well. Thank you for all your help.
