What linux? What XAMPP? What instructions? What error messages?

Hello

I use XAMPP for web development on Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon without any trouble. It is a great tool.

Did you follow the installation instructions ? See How do I install XAMPP? here : https://www.apachefriends.org/faq_linux.html

If like I was you are looking for an application that just works for web development and you aren't interested in learning to configure a web server with the terminal or mastering the arcane system of permissions which underlies any linux system:
https://bitnami.com/stack/lamp Bitnami Lamp Stack
is my recommendation.

Thank you timbow for the link. It is interesting and I will surely give it a try. Although I do not think that XAMPP is difficult to set up, it is always good to know about alternatives
