software rendering mode. What do I do?

Iam very new to computer science and linux distros and though I have a Nvidia gtx 1050, the terminal output tells me that the graphics mode setting has failed. What do I do?

Unless you are allowing direct access to the nVidia card you don't have it in a virtual machine. You have virtual hardware, including virtual graphics card. You need to install virtualbox add-ons.

Boot mint in your virtual machine.

Open a terminal and run apt install build-essential

Then open the Vbox devices menu and select Insert Guest Additions CD...follow the on screen prompts. Once you have Guest Additions installed reboot.

Edit to add - I normally apply all pending updates on a new Vbox install before taking the steps above.....not essential to do so though.

...increase Video Memory in VB's settings. Install the Guest Additions as said above. Read here as well.
