[Solved ] Cpu s made with different Nm technology

Post by deepakdeshp »

Hi there is one cpu in my machine wich is using 28Nm process while the other is using 56 nm process. Will the first one have twice the number of transistors or some other number? Does it have a formula to compare the number of transistors between the two CPUs?

Short answer: No and no.

Long answer: The smaller the fabrication size, the better power consumption and speed.

The number of transistors should and would increase as the dye size decreases?

No. The number of transistors is dependent only on the design of the CPU, not the fabrication size it might be grown to. The number of transistors can be increased by the designers to take up any room vacated due to the shrinkage but can != does.

Very logical. Thank you.

Smaller fabrication technologies are desirable for the manufacturer because they produce more chips for a given wafer size. The processing time is similar so the process can be viewed as more efficient. A downside is that smaller chip sizes can require more in the way of cooling if the increased speed advantage permitted by the increased density is to be realized too.
