Has the disk gone bad?

Hello,
I have a 2 TB external disk which is not detected by the system. I changed ports, systems with the same result. fdisk doesnt detect it too.
Is there anything I can do ? Especially to retrieve the data?

If that HDD is a Seagate HDD, it could be bad. I installed a new BarraCude Pro 1TB 7200rpm 128MB-Cache HDD in one of my 6 laptops 2 months ago, only used it 10-20 hours, and now the HDD is dead. Even with a 5 year warranty, they will ship me a reman/rehab unit.
I made the mistake of buying another Seagate product (the last one I bought was 10 years ago). Seagate used to be good, but their quality it seems has gone down hill. I will never buy another Seagate product again.
I have 4 HGST 1TB 7200rpm 32MB-cache drives ($50.00) in 4 laptops, one is 6 years old, another is 4 years old, and the other 2 within 1 year old and no problems whatsoever. HGST is Hitachi that was bought by WesternDigital. I have installed around 4 dozen of the HGST drives in laptops in the past 6 years and they are great.

Back to your question, I would try the HDD in several different HDD USB enclosures on several different PCs. If no go, I have opened a HDD, removed the disks and installed them in a good identical HDD and copied the data to a different HDD or PC (the environment must be dust & lint-free and enclosed).
Data recovery costs an arm & a leg, per se. That's why I keep data on 2-3 HDDs and/or flash drives or SD cards with auto-backup software. DVDs will last around 15 years+- if kept in a pristine environment.
Usually the logic board on the back of the HDD or the floating arm inside goes bad. The logic board can be replaced easily, and the floating arm can be physically moved back into a neutral position (if you are lucky). I usually buy a used identical HDD on eBay for less than $10.00 and swap out the logic board, and most times that works, or swap out the disks inside.
Boot several Live DVDs and see if the HDD is detected.

Thank you so much. I will try my luck by showing it to a repair shop. Seagate performance is really bad as my sister's disk has gone bad too.

Just to rule out a dud USB enclosure/bridge, can you remove it and plug it directly into your PC (even if you just have it on your desk/table, with the leads running to it there)?

What was meant was to try dmesg, e.g.

• Without the HDD connected, run dmesg | tail -10
• Connect the hard disk
• Run dmesg | tail -10 again; post both outputs.

The last 10 lines should be enough but if all 10 lines have changed in the second output (with the disk connected), try increasing -10 to e.g. -25.

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

FYI: It looks like you have a MS Windows file system (NTFS) on the USB external drive which most do unless the user changes it. I once had a major problem with my 1tb WD USB external drive and thought I lost everything, but I booted up and used a DVD of "Minitool Partition Wizard" ran its check repair which fixed it in less than a minute. I then made copies of everything on it elsewhere. I use a bootable "gParted Live" or another Partition Manager editor for checking drives with Linux file systems.

Here is a download link to MiniTool Partition Wizard v9.1 iso file to burn to a CD/DVD or USB stick. Otherwise, it is difficult to find this or you have to create it using a MS Windows machine.

I had one WD USB external drive go bad within months of purchase and required replacing and now a few years later it is making noises like pre-failure type hard drive noises. It is always good to have more than one backup drive and alternate them when backing up, just in case one does fail.

* I just noticed that over the past week or two that 1tb (terabyte) + SSD drives (Solid State Drives) have dropped their prices dramatically from well over $400us with some around $129us - $200us. These have no moving parts like the older regular mechanical platter hard drives (hdd), so should last longer.

That looks the same as the one I have; £3.50 GBP from a UK seller. Works great with all the HDDs and fine with USB2.0 ports; I've never needed to use the second power plug which comes with USB2 cables & adaptors, even when using an optical drive via USB.

Glad to hear it. I bought some for the single purpose of moving old files off of my old HD's that had lying around. At such a cheap price it's worth it.
