Updating Google Earth [Solved]
I am running Google Earth 7.1.8.3036 (64 bit). I see Google Earth Pro 7.3 is available. How should I upgrade?

Re: Updating Google Earth
If it is working for you now I suggest NOT to upgrade.
That is the exact version I have, and newer versions did not work, maybe just my hardware, but has been a problem for a few people, I could find a couple of links.
If you do try an upgrade I suggest you keep a copy of your now working version.

Re: Updating Google Earth
I agree, if you search "ubuntuGoogle Earth Pro 7.3" you'll see they had a lot of problems with that version in Linux involving gpu drivers, which is why it was pulled.
In Linux you don't necessarily want the newest version at all. There are rarely any new can't-do-without features, and getting the newest gug fixes means also the newest bugs. As long as they stilll apply security patches all should be well.

Re: Updating Google Earth
Well, the thing is that I have Google Earth PRO (V. 7.1) running in all my 32 bit Win XP computers and I would like to run GE PRO also in Linux although it does not have to be the latest version. So, how can i get GE PRO for my Linux Mint?

Re: Updating Google Earth
It's no problem to get it, https://www.google.com/earth/download/gep/agree.html
and some older versions here, https://support.google.com/earth/answer/168344?hl=en
Be warned though.
EDIT, and FWIW that 7.1.8.3036 is a "pro" version, my launch command
Code: Select all
/opt/google/earth/pro/google-earth-pro %f
Mint 20.0, and 21.0 MATE on Thinkpads, 3 X T420, T450, T470, and X200
Re: Updating Google Earth
Well, I have that version of Google Earth, not GE PRO. I guess it is pretty much the same software except that GE has some capabilities disabled and that is why they would have the same version numbers.
Being the same version and seeing as I do not really need whatever features are missing I think I am going to leave things as they are that is to say, same version 7.1.8.3036 on Linux as on Win XP except the version on Linux is not PRO.
I will save myself any trouble and just postpone the upgrade to GE PRO to whenever in the future I need to update or upgrade.
Thanks for your input.

Re: Updating Google Earth
Echo previous comments about later versions don't work, exactly my experience. The version I have was installed from:
Code: Select all
google-earth-pro-stable_7.1.8.3036-r0_amd64.deb
Thinkcentre M720Q - LM21.3 cinnamon, 4 x T430 - LM21.3 cinnamon, Homebrew desktop i5-8400+GTX1080 Cinnamon 19.0
Re: Updating Google Earth
How would I remove the version I have and how would I install the new one from the .deb file?

Re: Updating Google Earth
Run the synaptic package manager (from admin menu), search on google-earth, click on it and mark for complete removal, then apply.
To install the 'new' version simply double click on the deb file.

Re: Updating Google Earth
Thanks. Well, I messed up a bit. I ran the .deb file but it installed GE PRO V 7.3 which, as has been noted, does not work. I thought I had the .deb for V 7.1.
After some work I managed to install GE PRO V 7.1.8 and it works. I have told the Update Manager to forget about updating this package.

Re: Updating Google Earth
I am curious about the last "%f". What does it do? My launch command works fine without it.rickNS wrote: ⤴Thu Oct 25, 2018 11:54 ammy launch commandCode: Select all

Re: Updating Google Earth
I have no idea what those 2 bits mean. I got a small handle on some commands, but when it comes to %, ?, ^ and others in longer commands I have no clue. I know firefox launches with firefox %u.
Was curious myself, now I know.

Re: Updating Google Earth [Solved]
Well, I am still unclear on what it does exactly although I have a vague idea. In any case the launcher seems to work just fine without it so I will leave it as it is.
By the way, I notice Google Earth Pro installs alongside Google Earth and both can be run in the same machine.

Re: Updating Google Earth [Solved]
Don't know why you keep saying that, that older version 7.1* IS GOOGLE EARTH PRO.

Re: Updating Google Earth [Solved]
You are quite mistaken and I have already explained this.
In half a dozen computers I have, both Windows and Linux, 32 bit and 64 bit, in ALL of them there is a folder google/earth/free where Google Earth free V.7.1.8.3036 is installed and can be run and another folder google/earth/pro where Google Earth Pro V.7.1.8.3036 is installed and runs. I can choose to run the free or the pro version and they both have the same version number.
That is why I "keep saying that".
