Help: install LM on Macbook2,1

Post by webstuff »

Hi,

I've been reading a lot but I've bumped into walls.

https://mattgadient.com/2016/07/11/linu ... 06-models/
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MactelSupportTe ... yHelpPages

Some of these instructions are a bit old. I want to install Dual boot (OSX 10.7.5 and LM) and have ran into usb boot problems in that that created image isn't viewable when I boot the laptop by holding the control key.

I would like to use rEFInd to dual boot instead of using this method: (https://mattgadient.com/2016/07/11/linu ... 06-models/) since this method uses MBR. I don't want to use the MBR method because it says it's dangerous here for dual boot on this particular mac model:

"It describes hybrid MBRs in more detail, including why they're so DANGEROUS. For this reason
alone, I strongly advise against using a BIOS-mode install of Ubuntu if you're dual-booting with OS X"

I'm not sure where to begin.. do I install rEFind and then it will be able to magically able to read the USB iso? created using this

Okay, I will share my experience here. I was using Rufus.
For Ubuntu\Mint:

In Rufus use GPT with UEFI option and FAT32. You will need 64bit version use GPT with UEFI. After select ISO mode.

After installing you probably will have WiFi issue. firmware-b43-installer fixes it. https://medium.com/@david.pena.sf/i-ins ... e25278bf5a

After installing you may want fix F1..F12 keys help.ubuntu.com/community/AppleKeyboard

I need help and I hate apple for this!

Not sure how to dual boot OSX and Mint, but I was able to install 18.3 on my old 2.1 Macbook. I used the 32bit Mate version and burned the ISO to a DVD and booted from it. Worked well until I had CPU overheating issues (nothing to do with Mint, just the thermal paste on the CPU and the fan was dying). If you can get another hard drive to install in the Macbook it might be a good way to go (that way you can always swap the hard drive with OSX back if you need to).

You may need to disable the Mac's System Integrity Protection (SIP). Once disabled you should see the USB image when you reboot. Be sure to re-enable SIP when you've finished.

Look here if you wish to go this route:
