My Computer runs very slow when I have a youtube video playing in the background

Post by ceecee321 »

Hi,

When I am working and have a youtube video going on in the background my whole system becomes super slow. To a point where it takes a few minutes to exit out of a window due to lag.

Any insight/help on why this is happening is really appreciated.

Here is my computers info

You can try lowering the video quality &/or using a different browser. Also, maybe something here might help:

CeeCee321, Welcome to the forum.

You could check the standard software program "System Monitor" to find out which process consumes the most processing power on your pc.
When opened, click on "Processes", then click on the "CPU" tab to automatically lists the highest percentage consuming cpu processes.

Click on the graphics tab in "System Monitor" as well. This will surely surprise you as much as it did me. I see a constant "up to the ceiling" graphic for processing power when Youtube is running.

My 10 year old pc uses near 100% Cpu processing power when watching a youtube video. Your pc is 12 years old! Youtube eats at your (gpu) processing power usage as a kid in a candy store.

You could try the nouveau driver instead of the Nvidea driver. But that is just a wild guess. You could try a different browser. Sometimes Chromium supports video playback better WHEN you have hardware acceleration available from your hardware graphics card. I doubt it though, because your pc is 2 years older than mine, which is 10 years old already and my ancient pc doesnt have hardware acceleration available either.
