Hi herbie643,

What type of CD is it music, audio, VCD, data CD, etc...? Was this created a long time ago in MS Windows?

I do not see an optical drive listed in the results of the command you ran. Did you run "inxi -Fxzd"?

Make sure you have installed these packages from the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)": Mint-meta-codecs, udftools (with recommended and suggested packages), "lame", and restart computer or at least logout and back in.

Hi Herbie643,

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

Did you install those packages and reboot or logout and back in? And, does it play now? Make sure it Is clean too.

Yes, I even rebooted; to no avail.
I remember many years back I had clementine installed and it worked perfectly, now, not even.
If you have or anyone has no defiinitive answers, that's ok. Life goes on.

HI herbie643,

Okay, that's better results from the "inxi -Fxzd". Now we can tell your system does have an optical drive (CD/DVD/Blu-Ray) and it is a DVD burner writer drive.
Optical-1: /dev/sr0 vendor: PIONEER model: DVD-RW DVRTD08L rev: 2.54 dev-links: cdrom,cdrw,dvd,dvdrw
Features: speed: 24 multisession: yes audio: yes dvd: yes rw: cd-r,cd-rw,dvd-r,dvd-ram state: running
Like all mechanical drives (CD/DVD/BluRay and platter Hard drives HDD) they do wear out. I have had to replace many DVD/CD drives over the years. Have you tried any other disc to see if they work? Fortunately, DVD/CD burners (writers) are low-cost even for laptops. You can get a really nice USB external DVD/CD burner for around $25 us from Amazon.com, Ebay, maybe local business supply stores, etc... I do not know if that laptop has SATA drive interface or IDE/PATA, so getting a replacement for the internal DVD/CD burner is whatever is available.

** Your Bios is from 2009, so you might consider checking for Bios updates to it. From what I can tell, you do have the newest Bios update installed, but check anyway. I thought I saw a Bios update for 2016.

*** And, you only have 3gb of system memory (ram), so if your computer can handle more system memory (ram), then it would not cost much to add that and every gigabyte would help.

I wonder why the very recent kernel. There's a decent chance the newer kernels are going to drop support for your rather old system. I'd certainly start by trying the newest 4.15 kernel in the Update Manager.

My bad; I am now on MX-Linux and it is using
Linux mx 4.15.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.15.4-1~mx17+1 (2018-02-23) x86_64 GNU/Linux
and still no luck.
I'll keep plugging along and maybe by accident I will find the fix. Yeah right... lol

[Solved] No media player will play my cd.

Post by herbie643 »

Well I found the solution; seems the cd/dvd player was dirty somewhat.
I tried numerous dvd's like Solus, LM 11.04, just to see if the audio cd was bad.
Nothing worked so as I am sitting here looking at the player after I removed the cd and figured, "What the hell. It's not working" so I took my finger, I know it's the correct way, and rubbed over what I thought might be the sensors for reading."
Lo and behold I insert a cd and open Parole and it says "Play the audio disk"
Works great now.
Thanks for all your help and kinda kicking me into thinking the player might be bad.
