The information obtained according to https://www.kernel.org/
is as follows:
  Kernel 4.19 released October 22, 2018
  Kernel4.9 released on December 11, 2016
The difference between the two is nearly two years,
the old kernel can't make the new computer work.
The value of LMDE 3 will be greatly reduced.
Other Debian-based operating systems are also mostly
used with kernel 4.14 or higher.

Hi Tw Free Thomas,
You're right that 4.9 has been out for a while, but most distros (except Arch) don't support the latest kernels.

In particular, Debian Stretch, which is the base for LMDE 3, has committed to the 4.9 kernel and will stay on it until Stretch reaches it's end of life, approximately in 2022. That's because Stretch is the current Debian Stable release, and as such doesn't receive newer versions. It gives us older packages, but in return we get superb stability and security!

If you really need a newer kernel, you can install the 4.19 version from Stretch backports. If so, make sure you install either linux-image-amd64 for 64-bit systems, or linux-image-686 for 32-bit systems.

The new computer can be installed with Linux Mint 19.1.
However, you cannot connect when installing LMDE 3.
The biggest difference between LMDE 3 and LM 19.1 is the Kernel version.

I think you're going to need to download the proper kernel to a USB stick from a working machine. Then run LMDE and install the kernel from the USB stick. I am NOT the person that can help with that, and there may be better ways to fix this that I can't think of. And that even assumes your USB ports are working in LMDE.

I'm sorry you're having all this difficulty Tw Free Thomas. Hopefully someone has some good advice for you soon!

P.S. Did you check the integrity of the installation medium? Maybe you had a bad copy, and retrying with a fresh copy of the ISO will make a difference?

This would be the best way I can think of.

Go to https://packages.debian.org/stretch-bac ... 4/download on a computer with internet access and choose any of the download links. I suggest one on your continent so it shouldn't take as long to download. Save the file to your usb stick.

Boot into LMDE 3, open Nemo (your file manage) and go to where you saved the kernel download (it should have a long name, something like linux-image-amd64_4.19+101~bpo9+1_amd64.deb). If you double-left-click it, you should launch GDebi. Follow the prompts to install, then reboot.

Just after your computer has started, you should see the GRUB menu. Look for an option to boot with the 4.19 kernel. If you don't see that, you'll probably see something like "Linux Mint Debian Edition Advanced Options" or something along those lines. Use your arrow key to go to that, hit "Enter", and you'll be taken to a new menu. From there, choose the option to boot LMDE with the 4.19 kernel.

BUT FIRST I would recommend trying this:
I got hit with a bug where I could see my wifi network, but Network Manager just would never completely connect to it. If that's what you're seeing, you may have the same bug I did.
Run gksudo xed /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
Now add this to the bottom of the file:

Once you've done this, the file should look like this:

If that works, you won't have to install the backports kernel. If not... hopefully backports kernel will work for you.

To be promoted to 4.14 must be very professional like Clem,
It is best to launch the LMDE3 (kernel 4.14) beta,
and everyone will test the results of each report.
